Republicans in a Catch 22.

It seems to me the Republicans have painted themselves into a corner.

If they vote to increase the debt sealing without spending reductions, they will piss off the TEA Party.

If they vote to increase the debt sealing with tax loopholes being closed they will piss off their corporate masters.

If they dont vote to increase the debt sealing, they will piss off the middle.

What is the way out for the Republicans? Unless Obama caves on the Tax Loopholes I dont see how they get out of this.

They can tell everyone else they were just "compromising," as the Dems/media have been bitching at them to do this for quite some time. Then they can play back all of the bitching and claim that the Dems are just a bunch a disingenuous asswholes.

My guess is that no one will do a thing with the debt sealing.

Both sides have to scrap politics & realize that they are going to tick their respective bases off. Screw the bases at this point. Democrats have to cut more spending than they want, and entitlement programs cannot be off limits; Republicans have to raise taxes. This is an historic opportunity for both parties to really make a difference in our long-term fiscal health, and they're getting bogged down with the next election's votes and petty differences.

They can't be Democrats & Republicans in the next few days. They have to forget that they're in Washington, and just get 'er done....

Entitlement programs aren't off limits.

Obama has offered cuts in Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid.

Obama says that in return, he wants new tax revenue -- largely in the form of ending Bush-era tax cuts for wealthy Americans in 2013 -- to combine with the cuts to reduce the debt by $4 trillion over the next 10-12 years.

Republicans have refused.

Are the Democrats in Congress behind him on that? Just a few days ago, Pelosi drew a line in the sand on those programs...

Some congressional Democrats were alarmed by the president’s proposal, which could include adjusting the measure of inflation used to determine Social Security payouts. But others described it as primarily a bargaining strategy intended to demonstrate Obama’s willingness to compromise and highlight the Republican refusal to raise taxes.

Republicans have 1/3 of the power in Washington....

Why are they on the hot seat /

WTF is the leader of the country proposing....in detail....not a speech full of buzz words like "millionaires"....."billionairs"....."Corporate jets".....etc.

What tax changes is he proposing.....?
Where are the cuts in spending...?......in detail.....

He owns 2/3 of the government, and can't come up with a solid, complete, detailed, plan......ITS HIS FUCKIN JOB TO LEAD

Instead, after 2 1/2 years, hes still blaming Bush.....and whining about the party OUT OF POWER.....

Poor Blabo.

A simple Google search would have given him the information he claims he wants.

But he doesn't really want it.

Obama is proposing significant reductions in Medicare spending and for the first time is offering to tackle the rising cost of Social Security, according to people in both parties with knowledge of the proposal. The move marks a major shift for the White House and could present a direct challenge to Democratic lawmakers...

50 million senors are saying that they are off limits..

Could be, but the Teabaggers are going to hold America hostage, even though they raised the debt ceiling 9 times during Bush's spendthrift administration.

Remember, Bush inherited a record surplus.

Obama inherited a record deficit.

I agree. Its all Bush's fault.

I didn't say that.

However, since it took him 8 years to turn a prosperous nation with nearly full employment and a record surplus into a nation with a collapsed economy with widespread unemployment and a record deficit, it may be just a bit unrealistic to expect the mess to be cleaned up in 3 years.

What will be interesting is the next round of Congressional elections.

The GOP already got their noses slapped in New York, where Paul Ryan's vision was soundly rejected by the voters.

I think you are totally confused, republicans are all in favor of sealing the debt! Put it in a great big iron box and seal it up really good, so it can't run wild and wreak havoc on the economy! We can seal up the debt most effectively, by rejecting deficit spending, something republicans most certainly favor. Unlike Democrats who want to allow the debt to continue to run wild by raising the debt ceiling.

Here's the bottom line... Establishment republicans are faced with the dilemma of standing firm with the TEA Party calls to cut spending, or risk losing TEA Party support further, by negotiating away real spending cuts to get along with the dems. I don't have much faith in establishment republicans, I think they will ultimately cave and try to spin it for the TEA Party, who won't buy it again. This will end up being considered the final nail in the coffin for the establishment GOP, and the TEA Party will completely take over the party in 2012.

From your simple-minded perspective, you need to be worried about how moderates and independents are going to break... do they mostly favor spending cuts and reducing deficit spending, or are they mostly Keynesians who think bigger government and more deficit spending is the answer... I think I know which way they lean, but we'll have to wait and see for sure in 2012.

... the TEA Party will completely take over the party in 2012...

I certainly hope so.

Republican pollster and consultant Alex Patton conducted a recent survey showing that, by a 2:1 ratio, registered voters said the tea party movement did not represent their views.

The sentiment against the tea party is significantly higher among self-described independent voters, who swing elections and who looked unfavorably on the tea party by 3-to-1, the poll showed.

“There’s a real danger to Republican candidates,” said Patton, a founder of the Gainesville-based War Room Logistics polling firm.

I certainly hope so.

No, you actually DON'T hope so, because it will mean the end of radical 60s liberalism forever. What you hope, is that your propagandists can convince enough stupid people to vote against candidates labeled as "TEA Party" candidates, by continuing to denigrate them and insinuate they are a stereotype. That's what you HOPE, let's just be honest about it.

Is that the same poll where they asked them first if they self-identified as TEA Party supporters, which they mostly didn't, but when they began running down the list of TEA Party issues, they were almost in solidarity with support for those? I thought that one was fascinating... No, they weren't TEA Partiers... but they supported 100% everything the TEA Party stands for... lol Just goes do show the power of pinhead propaganda and dirty politics.

What you are going to have elected president in 2012, is a fiscal conservative... the question now is, will that be an Obama who has managed to morph himself into a distorted image of Ronald Reagan, or fool the people into THINKING he has undergone such a metamorphosis, OR... will the TEA Party elect a genuine fiscal conservative.

The reps would do better if they listened to Ron Paul.

Obamas only offered cuts verbally.

What he's really saying is "give me what I want, and we will get to the details later".

He can go screw himself with this $4 trillion over the next 10-12 years crap.

Oh yes right!!!!! We're going to trust the next bunch of parasites (legislature) to hold to that kind of agreement.

They need to cut 2.5 trillion off of next years budget.

That means getting rid of a lot of socialism.
