GM, Ford cars knock Toyota, Honda out of Top 10

Detroit has finally achieved its dream -- for one month, anyway. It knocked Japan's four best-selling cars out of the Top 10 best-sellers in the USA in May results reported this week.

The Honda Accord and Civic, and Toyota Camry and Corolla are always grouped behind the two best-selling pickups, Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado, on the list of top 10. This month, they fell into the teens, Autodata figures show.

A year ago, Camry was the nation's third best-selling vehicle for May. Last month it was 12th. The fourth-place Civic moved to 13th. The fifth-place Accord is now 15th. And the sixth-place Corolla fell to 16th.

It wasn't due to fading popularity. Rather, plants both in the U.S. and Japan have been operating at reduced levels because of parts shortages in the wake of the disaster in Japan. Toyota, for instance, reports a shortage of Camrys, with a 30-day supply, and Corolla, with a 50-day supply, well below normal.

it is pathetic that it takes a natural disaster to help make american cars #1 again....

They were number one to begin with.

It is pathetic that people like you who could afford an american car would buy a Toyota.

It is pathetic that you were born into a day and age where loyalty to ones country does not extend to consumerism

dune again shows how dumb he is

toyota and honda manufacture cars in the US, american cars are not in fact 100% made in america

where is your computer made dune? LOL

From parts made in China. And that, apparently, is "good enough" to make it "Made in America"...

If such were the case, there are no cars that aren't "Made in America" available for you to buy.

I have already destroyed Yurt's circular japanese argument previously, however, if need be, I can do it again. Let's start with the profits made by G.M. or Ford and compare where they go to the profits from the manufacture of a Toyota, assembled in this country or Japan. The majority ownership of Toyota is an investment bank in Japan, the number three such bank in the world. Where you do think they invest most of the trade imbalance generating funds they siphon from the U.S. via Toyota sales?

LOL...dune destroyed my argument...and circular? you are truly dumb dune....

you ignore the FACT that japanese auto makers do indeed build cars made in america...they employ 10's of THOUSANDS of american workers...but you want to focus on who "owns" the company. irrelevant and i've already shown YOU that foreigners OWN stock in GM and ford you ignorant waste

You say irrelevant, I say very relevant.

Where do you think the people your neighbor bought your computer parts from invest theirs?

You were trying to make it sound like you only buy things "made in America" by saying your neighbor built your machine. The reality is assembling parts from China doesn't make your computer "Made in America" unless you think Toyotas are "Made in America"...

Acording to Yurt, Toyotas are made in america.

Made In USA? A Toyota Is ‘Most American’ Car.

“Buy American” has long been a battle cry among some consumers who want to support domestic manufacturing. This is especially so in the car market. But do you know just how American your car is? Globalization of the auto industry with suppliers based around the world makes it increasingly difficult to tell the degree to which vehicles are made in the USA.
So what should you buy if you want to help the domestic car business? A Ford? A Chevy? Try a Toyota or a Honda. According to Cars.com, a consumer information and research site, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are number one and two on the list of “most American” vehicles. The Ford Escape, Ford Focus and Chevrolet Malibu complete the top five on the American-Made index. The index ranks vehicles based on the percentage of their parts, based on cost, that are made domestically, where they are assembled and how popular they are among U.S. buyers.
The Camry, which Toyota builds in Georgetown, Ky., and Lafayette, Ind., is in the top spot for the second year in a row. Toyota’s large Tundra pickup, built in San Antonio, Texas, and the Sienna van, from a factory in Princeton, Ind., also made the list. Of the top 10 vehicles on the American Made index, five of them come from Japanese car makers.

While people consider full-size pickup trucks quintessentially American, the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and MC Sierra missed the list this year. The F-150 is assembled in the U.S. but its proportion of domestic parts fell to 55%. In previous years it had a domestic parts content of around 80 percent, Cars.com says.

once again dune's ignorance is the ruin of his arguments

wow...you're actually denying that toyota manufactures cars in america

:palm:

I didn't deny anything, just made the point that you say toyotas are made in U.S.A. It wasn't a mutualy exclusive statement facepalm boy.

Once again Yurt ignores our ruinous trade imbalance.

Once again Yurt ignores our ruinous trade imbalance.

When I spend my hard earned money on a vehicle, I am looking to get the most dependable, highest quality vehicle for my money. I am not brand loyal. I did tons of research before buying my last few vehicles, and bought the one that was the best for the money.
