Police: 5 killed, 1 wounded in Arizona shootings
YUMA, Ariz. – A gunman opened fire in southern Arizona, killing at least five people and forcing officials to lock down a courthouse and area schools.
The shootings happened Thursday morning in Yuma County.
Yuma police Sgt. Clint Norred told the Yuma Sun that the shootings were connected and are under investigation. It's unclear whether there's been an arrest or what the motive was. The wounded victim was flown to a Phoenix-area hospital.
Four of the fatal shootings happened in the county and one happened in the city of Yuma, Norred said. Officers responded to the first call at about 9:30 a.m.
Yuma attorney A.J. Taylor said her office is a block away from the shooting scene within city limits. She said the shooting happened near the Yuma County Courthouse, which was locked down, along with some area schools. Police also blocked off a city street. No one was injured at the courthouse or schools, which have since reopened.
Yuma County Presiding Judge Andrew Gold issued a statement through the Arizona Supreme Court saying officials are "thankful that those within the courthouse are safe," but shocked and saddened at the violent acts that occurred in the close-knit community.
Police haven't confirmed the identity of the victims or the shooter.
