Parents keep child’s gender under wraps

When many couples have a baby, they send out an email to family and friends that fills them in on the key details: name, gender, birth weight, that sort of thing. (You know the drill: "Both Mom and little Ethan are doing great!")

But the email sent recently by Kathy Witterick and David Stocker of Toronto, Canada to announce the birth of their baby, Storm, was missing one important piece of information. "We've decided not to share Storm's sex for now--a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a stand up to what the world could become in Storm's lifetime (a more progressive place? ...)," it said.

That's right. They're not saying whether Storm is a boy or a girl.

There's nothing ambiguous about the baby's genitals. But as Stocker puts it: "If you really want to get to know someone, you don't ask what's between their legs." So only the parents, their two other children (both boys), a close friend, and the two midwives who helped deliver the now 4-month-old baby know its gender. Even the grandparents have been left in the dark.

Stocker and Witterick say the decision gives Storm the freedom to choose who he or she wants to be. "What we noticed is that parents make so many choices for their children. It's obnoxious," adds Stocker, a teacher at an alternative school.

what the ....

they can't be saying that are going to allow him or her to choose their sex via a sex change....so are they saying that if the boy wants to be a girl, they will dress the toddler as a girl because the toddler said so?

that's mental abuse. every child desreves to have an identity. It's irresponsible and selfish of these parents to impose their hangup onto their child. Take those kids away from these bad parents

I'd be quiet if I was you. What your parents did to fuck you up was criminal!

I don't know about the merits of adopting this laissez faire, some say hands-off approach, to raising their fused gametes.

However, the plan to allow the child to develop in its own way does seem to be flawed when the parents, by choosing to name their progeny 'Storm', seem to be sub-consciously laying out a future career path which ultimately leads to the World Wrestling Federation*.

*yes, i know it's not called that anymore

Why is this so terrable. Sure it depends on how long they keep it undesclosed, but much of "gender" is taught to children based on what sex they are. Boys are given trucks and tools as toys and girls are given dolls and doll houses, if you dont disclose the gender right away, you avoid roll modles from being imposed on a child and allow the child more time to develope who he/she is before those rolls are decided for him/her.

In my experience, one of my siblings tried the "gender neutral" approach, parents who attempt this stuff with "gender neutral" toys tend to find their little boys using the blocks as trucks and little girls using the same blocks as dolls. It's quite comical to watch.

I find it interesting, and so long as they love the kid and don't abuse it by regular beatings with chains, I'm reasonably sure that this person will be who they are supposed to be anyway. I also find it unlikely that their young siblings will be perfect in keeping their younger sibling in the dark as to what equipment they are using.

As a resident of the nation whose court system fucked up the names, I thank you for getting it right. World Wrestling Federation = WWF; World Wildlife Entertainment = WWE. :clink:
