They would lash me to a stretcher then prop me up against a table with my head down. They would then pour about two gallons of water from a pitcher into my nose and mouth until I lost consciousness.

And from the second prisoner: They laid me out on a stretcher and strapped me on. The stretcher was then stood on end with my head almost touching the floor and my feet in the air. . . . They then began pouring water over my face and at times it was almost impossible for me to breathe without sucking in water.

This has been presented before. The techniques used by the CIA were not the same- Precautions were taken and except for KSM a session average was 14 seconds. KSM had ten sessions with and average 2 minutes-his total of water applications being 143 times. Yes it was awful-yes it broke him and finally, yes, it was effective. He was the admitted master mind of 9/11. Just as I feel no pity for bin Laden who is dead, I feel no pity for KSM who is still alive.

America's Actions are Just and Decent if Others Behave Worse?

It's Not Torture if No One Dies?!!
Defining Brutality Downwards?!!

Of course its illegal for legitimate soldiers. Terrorists aren't soldiers though.

We need to decide whether or not we are a shining example for the world or whether we are what our enemies claim we are.

Right is right. We either stand for what is right or we may as well resign ourselves to being the next super power to be relegated to a has-been pile.

We need to stop being pussies about it and do what needs to be done. Waterboarding is very effective and safe, and in spite of what all you pansies whine is not torture.

redefining something doesn't make it 'not torture'. otherwise, we'd be facing numerous redefinitions of semi automatic firearms as machine guns, semi auto shotguns as destructive devices, and be reduced to single shot muzzle loaders because they are for 'sporting' purposes. wake up and smell the coffee.

If it's not torture, then we have no business complaining if "their" guys do it to "our" guys.

Because "our guys" wear uniforms and fight in accordance with international rules of war. If "our guys" didn't, then they could be legally subjected to waterboarding. Don't you know the difference between a legal soldier and an unlawful combatant?

Agreed on all points. I'm amazed that people don't get the concept that we stand for something in the world, and that there is a responsibility that goes w/ being a superpower.

I don't care what anyone says: when I see a video of waterboarding, my reaction is basically "that's not America." We should have better standards than that.

Stop whining about your emotional reaction to seeing something unpleasant. Life isn't a bed of roses.

What a poor argument. It's not merely seeing "something unpleasant." It's seeing an act of torture, and the kind of behavior that we find reprehensible in other countries. It's seeing us lower the standards of this country to that of those we condemn.

It lessens our moral authority in the world. How can we waterboard and hope to have any credibility on other issues regarding human rights?

No worries; I don't expect you to answer that, or think about it. You simply don't get it.

When we, as a nation, decide on our foriegn policy based on the need to prove our manliness, we have ceased to be what we were.

This is not about not being pussies. It is not even about whether or not it is torture. This is about whether we do what is right or not. It is about whether we stand behind our word or be proven liars. It is about whether we, as a nation, take the high road or whether we become as bad as those we condemn.

And we have signed treaties and documents saying we would only refrain from waterboarding uniformed solders? Are you sure about that?

No it isn't. But we have always claimed to be the shining example of the best a nation can be. If you want to throw that away, its up to you. I think we should never abandon our principles and our willingness to do what is right.

Their guys don't do it to our guys. They fucking brutalize them and then cut their heads off with a kitchen knife!! People, stop pretending this is a tit for tat game!! Even if we do the right thing, and don't torture the enemy, our people risk getting fucked up when they are taken hostage. The enemy will always have a reason to fight us, no matter how pure and noble we behave. The reason for this is that the enemy is a backward, pathetic, depraved, culturally irrelevant, and murderous entity, and will continue to be for the forseeable future.

We should always remember to develop our customs and manners seperate from ANY DISCUSSION ABOUT THE ENEMY WHATSOEVER!! The pathetic, sub-human reality of al-Queda and Wahabbist mentality cannot be compared to the US. Now... we should stop waterboarding people.

You're the one who doesn't get it. We lose respect when we treat them like pussies.
