Obama out of touch with working class Americans.

There have been studies that show increase in fuel efficiency lead to an increase in driving, one that actually negates all the benefits from an increase in gas mileage.

If you are looking to spend less money on gasoline, those are your options. If people choose to drive more and negate the financial benefits of higher fuel efficiency, that's up to them.

When people talk about 'buying American' their motive behind it is usually employing American workers. Since these foreign companies do employ a lot of auto workers, it's unfair to characterize them otherwise. Now since you're concerned about where their headquartered, that's more legitimate (though why you are concerned with corporate bigwigs is beyond me). In any event America will always dominate the truck market, mainly because we're the only country that needs them. When Russia becomes more prosperous, they might too.

I bought a Prius used last year for 7 K-paid cash. My savings on gas was immediately 70.00+ a week. True my old vehicle was a mid size SUV- but I no longer lived in the Sierras and my need for 4-wheel drive was no longer an issue. Buying used foreign cars (Prius is now manufactured in MS USA) I think is an issue when buying new, but not used. I agree that we ought to try and support American workers when we can-but we also have to support our own bottom line-especially in this kind of an economy.

As an aside I have had no problems with my cars performance or reliability....it really is a marvelous car.

To tell you the truth, if my Honda Civic Hybrid wasn't falling apart from the dirt roads I would still be saving nearly $300/mo in gas. Unfortunately it was falling apart, so I had to get rid of it... There's some things you have to sacrifice in order to live where you want.

He makes a joke about having people needing big cars if they have 10 kids. I was at my sister's babysitting yesterday and she has a 3 1/2 year old and 4 month old twins. I know some of you have kids on this board. Any ever have that many around that age? My sister just got one of those massive Toyota Sequoias I believe it is. I don't know how many normal size cars can fit three kids seats comfortable across the back seat. (guess should through in they have a Burner as well so they need space for him)

We had 4. You want at least a 7 passenger vehicle for a family if you have 2 or more kids. What with birthday parties and sporting events etc. This is not to say you can't manage it without one-but it certainly has a huge convenience factor. I know people with 6+ kids and they all have 8-10 passenger vans

By all means, if I missed part of his comments, LINK us up to them. Rather than simply telling people 'go find what I already have'. My take was on the comments in the article I LINKED to.

Done.

yeah, so the government should STATE that rather than mock those who are being hit with higher gas prices.

He did and I didn't take it as mockery.

Yeah.... and if our government would stop telling us how nothing can be done in the short run and actually start planning and making the long term changes then maybe we could get somewhere. Instead we get 30 years of a game of Pete rePete.

Obama has put out an energy proposal just last week that outlines his plan.

Who has said it is unAmerican to drive less? Most Americans are being forced to do just that because of higher prices. Hence the demand destruction discussion on the other thread.

I was kidding, SF. Get your panties unbunched. Having said that, I don't remember the exact quote, but in the not too too distant pass Ari Felischer waxed eloquently about high energy consumption being the American way of life.

He absolutely is out of touch to think the average American can simply run out and buy a newer more efficient vehicle given the pathetically weak state of the economy and the lack of credit available to the working class Americans.

Vehicle manufacturers have actually been very aggressive in extending credit on very favorable terms for the purchase of new vehicles. Now, with the state of the economy many may not be able to get a new car in any event, but lack of available credit for the purchase of automobiles is not really a problem right now.

Which it will if we see gas prices stay this high.

It's kind of a chicken-egg thing, though. Gas prices are higher now because of increasing demand resulting from increased economic activity. Oil and gas prices were low because of low demand due to decreased economic activity. The relationship is a bit more complex than you suggest.

Tell us... who is upset that he plugged the American auto industry???

That's basically what he did in my estimation.

If you have more than 2 kids in car seats, you need a big vehicle. And if you don't want a minivan, we're talking Tahoe, Exhibition, Suburban, Sequoia type vehicles.

She previously had one of those Acura SUV's and that wouldn't fit three car seats in the back.

This is just a little partisan red meat here from Pelosi. What's interesting though is the price of gas at the time she said it. I'm pretty sure gas went WELL above three dollars under Bush.

Now how in the hell did u get 7K in cash I ask u? Did you steal money while you were hacking those email accounts of your co workers? It is either that or the sleuthing done by the Long Island Lolita was right all along and you're on welfare and farming pigs!

If I am going to buy a fuel efficient car it will be from Toyota, Nissan or Honda.

Obama is quite out of touch with working class Americans.

and 'maybe' Nat gas cars? Well, at least the schmuck mentioned the best option we have available. But I bet this entire point gets missed do to his mocking people complaining about high gas prices.

Yes, I am sure they are happy to sell us that new insanely high priced Chevy piece of shit Volt or some such nonsense.

I wonder if the Messiah knows that most of the electric cars and hybrids are out of the price range of most Americans right now? I wonder if the ONE recognizes that his buddies at the big investment banks haven't done much to loosen credit to the average working class American?

No... he simply wants to mock them. Great leadership Saint Obama.

Indeed he is out of touch. Doesn't seem to have a clue that many are not making ends meet, much less being in the position now to buy a car, any car. At the rate that gas prices are going, those that are 'underemployed' and their numbers are legion, will not be able to get to work.

You know driving with the top down increase drag significantly and therefore causes the car to use significantly more gas to maintain the same speed? As in a lot more gas then with the AC on (over 40 MPH anyways). Same with driving with your windows down.

I wasn't aware of the top down increasing drag. I thought the less bulk or size, the better.

There goes my conservation effort. :(

I prefer the top down. :)

The perfect picture of health.

Superfreak, you're out of touch with working class americans as evidenced by your globalist belief that all functions besides CEO and Sales Associate should be done by slaves in foreign lands.

All you internationalist fascist neocon traitors are out of touch. May you choke on my obvious truths. Have fun trying to rebutt my awesomeness, you human sphincters.

I know, there I go again, not sticking to the script. I'll do better in the future---cross my ever-loving hacking heart :D

I stand unrebutted.

Globalist neocons are also out of touch with working americans. They believes their wages should be dropped to the levels of the chinese slaves to 'compete'.

Anyone care to say otherwise?
