12 killed in Afghanistan amid protests over reported Quran burning

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Twelve people were killed Friday in an attack on a U.N. compound in northern Afghanistan that followed a demonstration against the reported burning last month of a Quran in Florida, authorities said.

The fatalities comprised seven U.N. workers and five demonstrators, officials said.

Another 24 people were wounded, said Abdul Rauof Taj, security director of Balkh province.

....

The attack followed a demonstration against the reported burning of a Quran by Florida pastor Terry Jones, who gained international attention last year when he announced that he was planning to burn a Quran, the U.N. source with knowledge of events said.

Fri Apr 1, 11:39 am ET MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan (Reuters) – At least eight foreign U.N. workers were killed, two of them beheaded, on Friday in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif after a demonstration against the burning of Korans by a U.S. preacher, a regional police spokesman said.
"Eight foreigners were killed and two were beheaded," said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a police spokesman for the northern region.
Over a thousand protesters had flooded into the streets of the normally peaceful city after Friday prayers, and after two or three hours violence broke out.

Animals.

Is the pastor i.e. "man of God" (and I use the term loosely) responsible for inciting violence? Would the workers have been killed had he not burned the book?

Nothing justifies this tragedy but I hold Jones morally responsible for the actions that led to violence, if indeed it was the burning that triggered the attack.

What if it was in answer to the Stryker brigade kill team that targeted and killed innocent Afghans?

Then I guess you hold those that work at abortion clinics, cleaning wombs woth vacuum cleaners, responsible for the bombers and shooters that kill abortion doctors, etc.....

Same logic....

And to think, there are some people who imagine that religion is at the root of almost all conflict.

What a world, eh?

Not sure if this is the same but after opening night at Dodgers stadium in the parking lot two Dodgers fan jumped three Giants fans and critically injured one of them who is still in the hospital. Did the Giants fan incite the violence by wearing Giants gear to Dodgers stadium? Would the Giants fans have been beaten up if they didn't have those clothes on?

I think in both cases 'ignorance' and a lack of any substantial education is the real winner.

I mean, what sort of ill-educated savages take the Koran or baseball seriously. (The answer is pussies, who i'd be quite happy to show the error of their ways in a pub car park some day.)

Sports has gotten crazier in my lifetime. Going to an opposing stadium these days ain't what it used to be.

I guess Europe has always been like that w/ soccer, but I have really noticed it in America over the past decade or 2 w/ the NFL, NBA and MLB....

Charver, if you want sports lunatics, study the history of the Blues and Greens in Byzantium. They were sports teams which evolved into political parties, and were the source of public brawls and rioting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippodrome_of_Constantinople

The rivalry between the Blues and Greens often became mingled with political or religious rivalries, and sometimes riots, which amounted to civil wars that broke out in the city between them. The most severe of these was the Nika riots of 532, in which an estimated 30,000 people were killed[citation needed] and many important buildings, such as the second Hagia Sophia Church, were destroyed. The current (third) Hagia Sophia was built by Justinian following the Nika Revolt.

since when does defiling paper and ink rate the death penalty

maybe we need a national holy work defiling day where holy works from all religions are defiled

Same logic....

Is abortion legal or not?

Is killing a doctor legal or not?
