Palin has path to win, Republican warns

(CNN) – Prominent New Hampshire Republican Judd Gregg says that Sarah Palin just might have a clearer path to the Republican presidential nomination next year than commonly understood – an event he warns would lead to President Obama's clear reelection.

Gregg, the former senator and governor of the Granite State, says the muddled GOP presidential field means it's more likely than ever there won't be a clear consensus candidate before the party's nominating convention in August of 2012. If that happens, says Gregg, Palin and her army of supporters might have the upper hand when it comes to settling on a presidential candidate.

"A candidate who runs second or third in a great many primaries could go into the convention with a sizable block of delegates," writes Gregg in an Op-Ed in The Hill newspaper Monday. "Who would this favor? Does Sarah Palin come to mind? Although she is not viewed by most as strong enough to win, she is viewed by many as a person worth voting for to make a statement."

While it's unlikely Palin (should she run) would win that many primary contests, placing second or third might be enough - especially this time around when delegates will be awarded a proportionate basis instead of the winner-take-all system that has previously been the rule in Republican primaries.

"Finishing second and third isn't really a big deal – until you get enough delegates to be the nominee," writes Gregg. "And picking a nominee who it seems would be easily defeated by President Obama might not be the best statement."

In 2008, Gregg was a supporter of Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who is all-but-certain to run again.

Is that why they are trying so hard to discredit her, the mainstream GOP that is?

of course, they have the most to lose
I bet people thought she couldn't win the Alaska gov race too.

Not really, there wasn't much known about her at the time and she was so different from the old white boys club and Alaska was ready for a change. They really didn't investigate her much until the Vice Presidential run! Then all the skeletons started to come out of the closet!

I wouldn't bet against her is Obama is facing a really bad economy. She gets the tea party and the right hands down. The independents and moderates will vote thier wallet. After spending trillions Obama should be riding 3.5 to 5% growth or he could be in trouble.

Not a chance in hell she wins the nomination.

Pretty stupid of him to be whining about the field not presenting a clear front runner right now given that we are over 18 months out from the election. I prefer things not become even remotely clear until March of next year.

I disagree wholeheartedly. People used to say the same thing about Bush.

It's not like we have high standards in the electoral process. Any candidate who can generate emotion & enthusiasm - which she clearly can - has as good a shot as anyone....

Bush was in no way the public nightmare that Palin is. She has been fucking up in the national spot light for almost three years now. Not even remotely similar.

She has NO shot. None. Zilch. Nada.... of winning the Rep nomination.

I give her a good chance, shit she revitalized the fossil's campaign.

She would sound good saying "it's the economy stupid", if in fact Obama doesn't get a 4 plus GDP run.

I'd vote for her in a second if she got the nomination regardless of how Obama lucks out on the economy. I think she'd be the most pro domestic energy of all the republitools.

i don't know that many pubs who support palin....

I don't know many who know who they are supporting at this point. It's still very early, and I think the author makes a good point, Palin will be a factor if she runs. I've thought all along, it's going to come down to Romney and Palin.. maybe a Pawlenty, Gingrich or Huckabee bringing up the rear... Trump or Paul could be darkhorses.. who knows? But I see Palin as being the favorite of social conservatives, and Romney being the favorite of fiscal conservative seculars and libertarian-minded. Historically, this kind of match-up has favored the "evangelical" favorite, because they control such a huge chunk of the GOP voting block... the Moral Majority. If Huckabee is out of it, and it comes down to Palin vs. Romney, who will the evangelicals support? I think, Palin.

I have gone way out of my way to have a heart-to-heart with my libertarian-minded conservative contemporaries, about jumping on the Anti-Palin Bandwagon because it is difficult to remain open minded, once you've made that stand. Once you've completely dismissed the idea that you might vote for Palin, it doesn't really matter what Palin's platform is, whether she is 100% aligned with what you personally believe in or not... she is tainted goods, because you've already proclaimed it to be! This is precisely how the left works through the media to control you, to make you vote or not vote in a certain way. People don't dare come out and say they would vote for Palin... it's akin to saying you believe in Jesus! You're labeled a radical zealot who wants to impose his/her religious will on others... because that is the perception that is built. Or you are "stupid" and can't see that Palin is not a "seasoned politician" or doesn't fit the template... doesn't conform to our perception of what a president "should" be.... which is apparently, a near-perfect man, who never has misspoke, or done anything remotely questionable, and graduated from an Ivy League school.

Long answer; you know all you really wanted to say was "Sarah Barracuda!"

As Rush says, conventional wisdom is hardly wisdom.

Welcome, President Palin! :)

If Palin gets the GOP nomination, any debates would be very entertaining.
