Obama creates indefinite detention system for prisoners at Guantanamo Bay

President Obama signed an executive order Monday that will create a formal system of indefinite detention for those held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, who continue to pose a significant threat to national security. The administration also said it will start new military commission trials for detainees there.

The announcements, coming more than two years after Obama vowed in another executive order to close the detention center, all but cements Guantanamo Bay's continuing role in U.S. counterterrorism policy.

Poor Democrats, another broken promise by der leader.

If you haven't noticed from the other obvious post about this very same topic, Obama has no other choice, he was forced by Congress to break his promise because they refused to give him the funds to move the prisoners, it was either fix the prison as it is now or stop funds and let everybody in the prison die. If you say that was the best idea I swear to god this post will become more useless then it already is.

Did Obama announce his new policy of indefinite detention even for those acquitted of terrorism...????

Really?....his party controlled both houses of Congress with unbeatable majorities and he couldn't do a thing....??? Is that the gig your trying to pass off here...?:palm:

Lets see, democrats had control of both the house, the senate and yet der leader still did not close it. Your man broke his promise .

Also, my understanding of the executive order, they can now hold detainees indefinitely, EVEN IF they are acquitted! Yes.... you read that correctly.... Even if they are tried by a military tribunal and found not guilty.... Obama can still detain them at Gitmo indefinitely!

Now..... Bush and Republicans didn't make Obama do that. Where is the moral outrage from the left on this? People who are tried and found not guilty, should be released, don't you think???

What? It takes more money to detain them, forever, then to ship them back to Iraq where we picked them up, a one-time boat ride. We have ships going over there empty on a continuous schedule.

Why should there be outrage?

We're talking about apples & oranges here. Bush was a flunkie who managed to get ahead on name only.

Obama = the messiah. How can you even question the perfection of a thought process from someone like that?

LOL the libtards have no response.

What response are you looking for? It sucks but I don't see what other option the president has when the Congress controlled by his own party stripped any funding for closing down GITMO and shipping the detainees there to the states and for any civil trials for any GITMO detainees.

The dumbasses win. Why don't you just kick back and enjoy it? I understand that your goal in life is to piss off liberals, but you should try not to be so dependent on others to feel happy and fulfilled.

this is a crock of shit excuse for the libs. there were two years before that dems had the ability, majority, and authority to rid us of this monstrous unconstitutional abomination. This is being used by BOTH parties to continue a policy that they never had any intention of getting rid of to begin with.

I'm not excusing anything. I'm just telling it like it is. Certainly the Congressional Democrats had no intention of getting rid of the policy. That's why they passed laws blocking funds from being used to get rid of the policy. But blaming Obama for not doing something that Congress prevented him from doing is kind of silly. You can blame him for not doing more to press the issue and for not placing a high priority on getting it done, and I do, but pretending that Obama could do it all by himself if ridiculous.

Well...that didn't stop liberal's from screaming and yelling about Bush on the subject... The last two years of Bush's candidacy we had a democrat controlled congress and yet libs were on message boards screaming to high heaven about Gitmo,...so come on libs scream at Obama! Fucking liberals have had 4 years of control in congress, 2 of which they had a super majority! I guess what we can actually deduce from this is that liberal democrats WANT GITMO! Frigging hypocrites!

Seems to me, you are totally excusing the fact that the Obama Administration has completely trashed the Constitution, and will hold people who have been found NOT GUILTY by a military tribunal... INDEFINITELY! Never before in the western world, has such a policy been implemented. You might expect to see this from a Hitler or Stalin, maybe a Mussolini or Mao... but not an American president.

I wonder what pinheads would be saying, if the Bush Administration had even suggested we detain people who had been found not guilty?????

Excerpt:

"The order, which was completed last December, aimed to give those facing indefinite detention a possible way out of life in prison without charge or trial. But legislative provisions passed at the end of 2010 will effectively render the review process useless to many of the detainees. Because of the congressional restrictions now in place, a detainee who wins his freedom through the review board may in fact be ineligible for release. Similarly, a detainee who wins his military commission trial or even serves a short sentence could wind up being put on a "releasable" list, but not sent out of Guantanamo."
