Kudos to the governor for repealing the death penalty! No telling how many innocent people are put to death in this country, especially in that backward state of Texas!

Illinois has become the 16th US state to abolish the death penalty, after the governor signed a bill making permanent a 10-year-old moratorium on executions.

Governor Pat Quinn signed the bill after spending two months consulting with victims' families, prosecutors, religious leaders and others.

1. kenneth's link doesn't link to the article

2. i have strong hunch that kenneth wrote the first sentence because it is flat out incorrect according to his latter sentences. repealing does not equal moratorium, no matter how badly kenneth wants to believe it does.

3. poor kenneth :(

Yurt....

He made the moratorium the state had on the DP.... PERMANENT.

Thus, while they haven't used the DP during the moratorium, the DP is now officially repealed.

I'm glad. Until they can fix the problems with how the death penalty is applied in a fair and equitable manner then it should not be used.

Besides, a certain viscious part of me likes the idea that some muderer is going to rott in some hell hole instead of getting the easy way out.

The death penalty should be abolished for several reasons.

First, until we can be absolutely sure we never execute an innocent person, it is murder.

Second, the cost of a capital crime investigation and trial has been shown to be astronomically higher than standard investigations & trials. So it does not save money or can even be costlier.

Third, the idea that we execute someone for murdering someone is ridiculous.

Nor do you address the issue that it is applied in an unfair and unequitable manner. Meaning the poor and minorities are far more likely to be executed then white or affluent persons. Nor do you address the fact that capital punishment does not work as a detterent either.

You had already addressed the fact that it is applied in an inequitable manner.

The fact that it is a deterrent or not never seemed relevant. It is an excuse used to justify state sponsored revenge.
