State's black fourth-graders post worst reading scores in U.S.

Reading scores for Wisconsin's African-American fourth-graders trail those of their racial peers in every other state and the District of Columbia, according to a national government report that delivered dire news Wednesday about how Wisconsin prepares its students.

Further, fourth-graders as a whole in Wisconsin are losing ground in reading while other states make gains, as measured by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the nation's report card. Only 33% of the state's fourth-graders scored at a level considered proficient or advanced by the test; the rest scored at a basic level or lower.

Reading results for Wisconsin's eighth-grade students, the other grade that took the reading test, were somewhat more promising.

Wisconsin's eighth-graders matched their highest score of the last decade. Even so, only 34% of Wisconsin's eighth-graders were considered proficient in reading.

However, the average score for African-American eighth-graders was the same as that for three other states and higher only than the average from black students in Arkansas. The average score for black Wisconsin eighth-graders was even below the average score for the state's eighth-grade English language learners. In other words, black students scored poorer in reading than students for whom English is not their native-born language. (How the fuck does that happen?)

"It's an outrage," said Howard Fuller, former Milwaukee Public Schools superintendent, voucher advocate and head of the Institute for the Transformation of Learning at Marquette University, in response to the latest scores. "And the thing that angers me more is that there is no widespread outrage. We get these statistics, and people mutter the normal this and that, but then everyone goes back to whatever they were doing."

They should all be fired, but we know that will never happen.

I'm not going to blame this all on the teachers but Wisconsin's 8th graders read at a 32% proficiency when the national average is 30%. So while that is still a terrible number they are at least above average. The thing is though the state is over 90% white. You throw that into the equation and that 32% looks pretty poor.

Take a state like California which is close to half Hispanic and for a decent number English is not the first language and you aren't as surprised with a lower number (based on how different racial groups test out). Same with the South with large number of blacks.

For such a lily white state you would expect more.

Why do blacks drag down the average so much? Didn't The Great Society programs work?

There are obviously a lot of factors that go into it and my point wasn't a 'blame the blacks' one it was simply a fact based on scores. And no the Great Society isn't going to make up for years of slavery and discrimination and being forced basically not to read. However the Great Society did do an excellent job of helping to break up the black family with its preverse welfare laws that bascially encouragd families not to stay together.

LBJ did better than the KKK could have ever dreamed of.

I think we should blame the governor of Wisconsin personally.

But the governor of Wisconsin is doing what I and others told him to do.

Actually we told him to also fire all workers who protested on taxpayers $.:)

If he don't watch it,,,, we may fire him in the next election.

We're pissed off and want union members to know it.

They're a very small number at this time and the numbers are getting worse for the unions each day that they protest next to flags with the hammer & sickle.

Ya know that's a comment that pissed me off. I'm proud as hell of what my grandfather, a Rail Road Conductor, did for himself and his family as a Union man. I would not have the standard of living, level of education and quality of life if it wasn't for the sacrifices and hard work that man made and to hear someone call him a commie cause he was a proud union man just irks the hell out of me.

The fact is, labor and trade unions did as much or more to end Soviet Era communism as did all the accumulation of nuclear arms and politicians bombasts. Why Reagan was chanting "Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall" it was trade/labor unions that tore that son of a bitch down.

Why the hell do you think in every communist/socialist revolution there has been one of the first things they do is out law union and arrest, imprison or execute union members? Why is that?

Being a member of a union does'nt make you any more of a communist or socialist then loving god and country and free enterprise makes you a Nazi!

My grandfather, and father were in a union, and I too have much to enjoy because of it.

But unions back then were different than today.

It's public union bosses that have angered so many. They're not representing they're members correctly.

One thing that really angers me and many more is the fact that they always talk about workers rights.

What about tax payers rights?

Why should I pay for all these goodies for public workers when I can't afford them myself?

These people don't get it.
