NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police said a 91-year-old World War II veteran suffering from dementia shot his daughter. Investigators believe he got confused and pulled out a revolver.

Police said 61-year-old Patricia Stafford Curll was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition.

Curll lives with her father, Freeman Stafford, at 2225 Pennington Avenue in the Inglewood area.

According to police, Curll called 911 around 1 a.m. and reported she was shot by her father. She later told emergency responders that he shot her while she was assisting him with a hand-held urinal.

Stafford was taken by ambulance to the Veterans Administration Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Police said he probably will not face any charges.

Police said Stafford appeared to not be aware of the shooting when police responded to his home.

Family members told police they didn't realize the man still had a gun. He was given the revolver as a gift 25 years ago by his son. The gun hasn't been seen in years. The gun was recovered from a shoebox beside his bed.

They also said the man was an expert marksman during his time in the Army.
