TUNIS — Chaos spread in the heart of the Tunisian capital on Friday afternoon as police moved on thousands of protesters during an impromptu funeral procession in front of the Interior Ministry, filling the street with thick clouds of tear gas and sending crowds stampeding for cover.
The state news agency later reported that President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali dismissed his cabinet and called new legislative elections in six months, The Associated Press reported.
It was unclear if the president’s latest concession would calm the riot-torn nation. The demonstrators who had gathered on Friday had been calling for Mr. Ben Ali’s immediate resignation in an extraordinary escalation of the month-long protests against his authoritarian government.
