A top agenda item for the incoming House Republicans is to immediately start cutting spending. The GOP promised to reduce “nondefense” (or alternatively “nonsecurity”) spending for 2011 to the 2008 level, representing a $100 billion cut. GOP leaders are now being accused of backsliding on that promise, so let’s take a look at the numbers.
The idea is to reduce fiscal 2011 “budget authority” to the level it was in fiscal 2008. The chart shows the growth in nondefense budget authority since 2000. The spike in 2009 is from $265 billion in discretionary spending authorized in the “stimulus” bill.

The Republicans said they'd save "at least $100 billion in the first year alone." Look it up. It's right in that spiffy Pledge to America marketing document the Republicans put out before the election. They aren't going to do that and aren't even going to come close.

That private sector group is known for wild ass guesses that are far off the actual numbers.
Economically we are likely going to see a good quarter or two to start the year due to relative strength over Europe and due to an extension of the Bush tax cuts. But fundamentally we are still very weak and essentially sitting on the edge. If the idiots in DC continue to spend recklessly as they have over the past four years... we are going to see the double dip. Still major concerns in the housing market. Still major concerns about state budgets (especially CA, IL, OR, NV and MI). Still an insane debt level. Still no fix for SS. Still no fix for Medicare. Still have the health care bill fiasco. Financial reg didn't do anything to the actual culprits behind the mess in 2007-09.
Jobs are still anemic. We need to see at least 350k per month for several months straight to loosen the corps up and get them investing again in labor.

How else can he credit the GOP with the economic turnaround unless he ignores all the signs currently out there that Obama's and Democrat actions of the last two years is REALLY what turned the economy around?

the pledge to cut 100 billion and The first spending cut measure to come to the floor — imposing a 5 percent spending cut on lawmakers' budgets for office expenses and staff salaries — is hardly in keeping with the promise to return spending back to pre-Obama levels. Such costs have risen by 14 percent since that time.
