Brown sworn in as California's 39th governor

Prop 13 was passed by the voters of the state of California. Thanks to the iniative process in the state it is as close to direct democracy as we can get which I thought Desh was a big fan of. California voters have also voted where 74% of the state budget must be directed. The Governor and Legislature only control 26% of spending.
 
You have a situation in Cali where someone who was given their house by their parents is paying 1976 taxes on their house while the young couple next door are paying 2008 taxes on the same value house.

The tax revenues went down 57% when P13 was inacted.

You people wonder why Calis other taxes are high?

Does that mean a bad law should not be changed because it was voted in by 2/3rds of the people 30+ years ago?

No Desh is for the Democrat Party, which is the exact opposite of being for democracy.

The will of the people right? There has been an opportunity every year to put on the ballot a repeal to Prop 13. It has not happened yet. Doesn't mean it couldn't though. You could start up a petition gathering group. There are others like you out there. You should look into it.

The problem was they didn't include a balanced budget portion that required the government to live within their means. And it was property taxes that went down, not all taxes. They increase sales taxes and almost completely replaced the lost revenue from the property taxes. At the same time the law does what it was designed to do, let people keep homes that they otherwise could not afford because of automatic property tax increases that were getting out of hand. The problem isn't prop 13, the problem is adding government programs without adding a way to pay for them, then borrowing the money to pay for them rather than working within their means. This largely isn't government's fault, most of those requirements were added by later propositions that were fundamentally unfunded mandates for government spending.
 
My fav J. Brown quote comes from when he was running against B. Clinton for the Democratic nomination, they were harassing Clinton for smoking pot and Brown interrupted and said, "hey, give the guy a break"!

i really hope you go out and preach this from the mountain tops...i really hope you get your party to try and overturn prop 13

you hate old people, who are by and large the people who benefit from this and would be forced out of their homes....i know a few of those people

please run on this....:)
