President Obama blasted his own party for choosing ideological purity over results Tuesday as he sought to defend the tax-cut deal he negotiated with Republicans.

In a surprise news conference at the White House, Obama angrily criticized liberals who say he caved by compromising with Republicans over the Bush tax cuts, telling Democrats that “sanctimonious” outrage does not help the American people.

“The New York Times editorial page does not permeate all across America,” Obama said.

The president said he is chomping at the bit to fight Republicans over the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy over the next two years, but for now he said he had to ensure that middle-class tax rates were not raised.

Carter destroyed himself by warring with the Congressional Democrats, and they very quickly grew to hate and loathe him (which was mutual). Obama will likely try to avoid repeating Carter's naive failings in dealing with them.

I just watched the news conference. He's a good man. Logical argument.

As Obama made clear the unemployed and low income folks need help NOW. Let the tax breaks continue for the wealthy. Let the deficit rise for two years. The point is tax increases can be levied on the wealthy two years from now. Meanwhile the unemployed and lower income people can still pay their bills while negotiations continue.

Was he supposed to use the 2 million "99-ers" as pawns? Was he supposed to cause the lower income people to pay additional tax when many have already taken lower paying jobs or pay cuts?

He didn't throw the needy/poor under the bus. So the wealthy get another two years of tax cuts. So the deficit rises. That can be addressed in 2012. It's another story to ask the poor not to eat or not to heat their homes for two years or however long the negotiations would have continued.

Obama did the right thing. The wealthy will still have the money two years from now to contribute to lowering the deficit because we know, for sure, they won't be trickling it down because they never did trickle it down. Just like the major companies which are sitting on huge monetary reserves. Tax breaks and trickle down bullsh!t are just that as far as creating jobs are concerned and as Obama made clear we'll get to see the Republican solutions now that Boehner is becoming speaker.

The Repub position has changed. Now they will have to come up with ideas. The "just say no" time has ended.
