Sarah Palin coins ‘word of the year,’ books boffo cable debut

According to TLC, roughly 4.96 million people tuned in to watch the first episode of "Sarah Palin's Alaska." That's the biggest premiere in the channel's history.

And as if the ratings triumph weren't enough, today the New Oxford American Dictionary declared "refudiate" the top word in 2010 — a verb that Palin apparently invented.

But in a release today, the New Oxford American Dictionary defended Palin's use of the word. "From a strictly lexical interpretation of the different contexts in which Palin has used 'refudiate,' we have concluded that neither 'refute' nor 'repudiate' seems consistently precise, and that 'refudiate' more or less stands on its own, suggesting a general sense of 'reject,' " the New Oxford American Dictionary said in a press release.

And lest you think the New Oxford editors were only hailing "refudiate" as a publicity stunt, let the record show that Palin's coinage was also named to the honor roll of the Global Language Monitor project — together with terms such as "spillcam" and "vuvuzela."

Be careful what you pray for.

You know, I kinda hope she does decide to run. I don't think she will, I believe she wants to remain a voice for the conservative movement, and help by endorsing and campaigning for a strong candidate with the right message. I see her in more of a cabinet role, maybe Secretary of Energy.. But, with the smart-ass condescending remarks from the left, and the constant denigration from the 'idiot wing' of the republican establishment, and the almost universal drumbeat that she just can't seriously win... I kinda hope she does run, and WINS the election over Obama in 2012. Just to prove you all wrong! Just so we get to see the stunned and astonished look on your faces, when you have to say.. President Sarah Palin! That alone, would be worth my vote.

Believe me, she could easily win the nomination, and the election. She has tremendous public support and appeal, and her exposure on this TV show will only broaden that appeal with the people. And after all, it is PEOPLE who vote and nominate a candidate, not media talking heads, not political pundits, not beltway elites. She will have to endure the constant bashing, but the interesting thing about all the anti-Palin rhetoric from the left and right, not a one of you have ever raised an issue with substantive policy positions or message. It's all personal attacks, superficial smears, condescending criticisms, and nothing of real substance. It all seems to boil down to your personal "dislike" of Palin, and that contradicts the appeal she has with a WIDE swath of the American public. You'll have to come up with something better than hate to beat her, if she decides to run.

My gut instinct is, she won't run. She may do the 'exploratory' and she may even enter the race for Iowa and New Hampshire, but I think she will ultimately acquiesce and throw her support to a Jindal or Pawlenty candidacy. The field is just too thick, and while I think she could ultimately prevail, she will decline to take it that far. Still, it is great to watch Democrats spend so much time and political energy "refudiating" her.
