Backpedaling already

Three days in and the backpedaling by Tightie Righties has already begun:

It's official: GOP leaders in the House and Senate have both confirmed that they will buck calls from the Tea Party and not back a ban on federal earmarks.

House Republican leader John Boehner addressed the issue Thursday night during an interview with Fox News, stating that he approved of a temporary moratorium on congressional earmarks but would not pursue a complete ban.

BAIER: The guys in line to be Chairman [of the Appropriations Committee], they're big fans of earmarks.

BOEHNER: There's gonna be an earmark moratorium, it's pretty clear.

BAIER: Why not an outright ban?

BOEHNER: Only because some things that people call earmarks here wouldn't classify as an earmark to the American people.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) was similarly dismissive of the idea during a speech at the Heritage Foundation on Thursday, arguing that an earmark ban would be unproductive.

"You can eliminate every congressional earmark and you would save no money..."

Remember when Righties tried to claim earmarks were the CAUSE of our financial problems?

It's beginning to look like it's going to be an extremely short honeymoon...

Three day is what? 72 hours? A trek to Houston. The amount of time you can go without a cheeseburger?

So GOP leaders say they will declare a moratorium on earmarks, and they have somehow 'balked' at the tea party who wants an outright ban of earmarks... but a moratorium is the same as a ban, and has the same results... and this is Big News for Democrats, because why?

care to give a link to any gop who said they would support an outright ban on all earmarks....i'm not aware of any who said this, at least the two quoted....

DeMint: We will ban earmarks, right away!
At least Eric Cantor, No. 2 in the House GOP, was clearer. In an interview last week with the Wall Street Journal, Cantor talked about "eliminating earmarks" as a way to "stop the horse trading that grows agency budgets."

There's a reason for the conflicting messages, says U.S. Rep. Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania's 16th District (Lancaster County, half of Chester, and parts of Berks), who has a standing policy against earmarks.

"The leaders are with us on the issue," he said in an interview last week. "The problem is that half the [GOP] conference wants earmarks, and the other half is trying to get rid of them."
