Bad Decisions in Public Speech

Terrible.

He took a page from the Limbaugh playbook, making fun of Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease.

On the October 23 edition of his nationally syndicated radio program, Rush Limbaugh accused actor Michael J. Fox, who has Parkinson's disease, of "exaggerating the effects of the disease" in a recent campaign advertisement for Missouri Democratic Senate candidate Claire McCaskill. In the ad, Fox endorses McCaskill for supporting embryonic stem cell research, which her opponent, incumbent Republican Sen. Jim Talent, opposes. Noting that Fox is "moving all around and shaking" in the ad, Limbaugh declared: "And it's purely an act. This is the only time I have ever seen Michael J. Fox portray any of the symptoms of the disease he has." Limbaugh added that "this is really shameless of Michael J. Fox. Either he didn't take his medication or he's acting, one of the two."

Just saw MJ Fox on David Letterman show last Friday....I was happily surprised to see him looking very well, speaking normally, and cracking jokes with Letterman...looked like his Parkinson's was pretty much under control these many years later(the Rush issue was in 06)
Funny, one would think it would be worse than 4 years ago.
Well, good for Mike...

My friend use to have bad days and worse days, did he have the surgery or did they change his medication and also, I heard he had quit taking his meds to make the spot!

There are a lot of things that can influence how one is doing with Parkinson's! Have a nice evening!

So as not to upset christie, I stand corrected...

After all the controversy and publicity and debate about his political ad, and the criticism he got from people like Rush Limbaugh, he really is in the eye of a political storm right now. But when he came to our studio for our exclusive interview, he was remarkably calm. He was also obviously symptomatic. He trembled uncontrollably, and his legs shook, but he explained it was actually a side effect of not taking enough medication. He told me he reduced his dosage because he didn't want to have dyskinesia, which is the side effect of too much medication, and which causes the swaying back and forth that was so evident in the controversial ad for Missouri Democratic Senate candidate Claire McCaskill. Fox said that he can never tell from one day to the next how serious his symptoms will be. It's a crapshoot.

I'm not upset because for me the whole point is that people shouldn't make fun of illness like these two guys did. Even if Fox cut back on meds to make the spot, he still has Parkinson's.

How nice that Limbaugh can make sport of others' misfortunes while sitting on his big fat hiney and bloviating to his adoring public.
