Obama talks innovation at Google exec's home

Presidents don't usually come in through the back door, but Thursday night Barack Obama entered a high-priced Palo Alto fundraiser home through the kitchen.

And before he could start speaking, the host's husband reported the real news of the night: The Phillies were leading the Giants 3-2.

Obama was on a trip to four Western states to pump up his party's coffers in the final days before the midterm elections and headline events that raised an estimated $1.8 million for the Democratic National Committee.

"Despite the game, we want to thank you for being here," said Zachary Bogue, husband of Google executive Marissa Mayer, as he introduced the president to about 50 supporters at the couple's home.

those evil wealthy republicans!!!

The case of Citizens United and the midterm elections
For Your Consideration

We are closely approaching the midterm elections and Democrats are in danger of losing seats in the House and Senate.

Groups supporting Republicans have outspent Democratic groups 7:1 ($17 million vs. $2.6 million) in the first three weeks of September. Since the 5 to 4 Supreme Court favorable ruling of Citizens United over the Federal Elections Commission, businesses, corporations and unions are allowed to spend unlimited amounts of money supporting or denouncing individual candidates.

Eighty percent of Americans were against the Citizens United ruling, yet the conservative faction of the Supreme Court made it law. One might say they were acting as activist judges legislating from the bench against the will of the people. Given that billions are spent on advertising and marketing to sell products, it is safe to say that, as a general rule, the more money that is spent on a candidate, directly or indirectly, the greater likelihood that candidate will be elected.

Is this what we want our democracy to be?

It's hard to imagine that our founding fathers would endorse a government ruled by those with the most money.

Teddy Roosevelt, a Republican, said that America would never be destroyed by a foreign power but he warned that our political institutions, our democratic institutions would be subverted by malefactors of great wealth who would erode them from within.

Yeah, supposedly this person hosting the event also has a $10 million condo at the Four Seasons on Market St. in San Francisco where the event was going to be held but because of the Giants playoff game they (fucking thankfully) moved it to this (same) persons house in Palo Alto so as to not shut down the entire City.

Please excuse me if I am wrong Bfgrn but for some reason I thought you were from outside the U.S.? Where you are from doesn't matter other than San Francisco is a politicians ATM. Well because my city is so left-leaning it happens to be the Democratics ATM (there are similar Republican cities throughout the country though probably not this size.) Nancy Pelosi lives on my street and Dianne Finestein one street down. All high profile Democratic politicians come through here because there are politicially active people with lots of money to give away. And it's been this way well before the Supreme Court ruling.

I am a US citizen and live in the USA.

Do you see THESE people in your neighborhood spending money on who THEY want elected, because that is one of the dangers of the horrible right wing activist Supreme Court ruling.

Is THIS who should have influence on OUR elections?

Be thankful you live in a left-leaning city. They are becoming extinct.

Such typical BS.

Here's the playbook: create a myth that Democrats are socialists, and are against wealth & corporations, and think "a level playing field" means that everyone makes $50K a year.

Next, criticize Democrats for making money and garnering support from those who make money, and portray them as hypocrites, because, after all - they're "against wealth."

I'll ask again: can we get a higher quality of rightie on this board?

LOL

"Onceler can't counter the points"....that the left is anti-wealth & anti-corporation?

Ever hear of Bill Gates? Steve Jobs? Ted Turner?

There you go again with "by & large." The left is not anti-wealth. You're just stuck trying to defend a stupid thread again.

How about this:

1)Demonize republicans as the party of evil corporations that cheat america out of tax revenue by hiring overseas and sheltering assets.

2)Ignore Google

Kirk campaign held “Bejing fundraiser” day before tax loophole vote

Wednesday, Oct 20, 2010

* Congressman Mark Kirk’s US Senate campaign has been plagued by strange internal leaks for months. And now we have one that includes a plan for a “Bejing fundraiser,” which was held the day before a House vote to close tax loopholes for companies that send jobs out of the country.

* The Kirk campaign says that the candidate held a “Skype” fundraising meeting with American businesspeople in Bejing, China. I’m told that 12 people participated in the event.

FEC records show that Geoffrey Enck contributed $1,000 to Kirk that day. Enck is the CEO of ITI China Holdings. One of the things the company does is investment banking for Chinese manufacturing plants.

* And then the next day, Kirk voted “No” on a bill to close a tax loopholes that would prevent companies from “using current U.S. foreign tax credit rules to subsidize their foreign activities .”

This anit-wealth, anti-business, anti-American values bullshit has been all over Faux news for the last few weeks. Of course the wingnuts here will regurgitate it. Just the other day Hannity was talking about Obama's anti-business agenda. What he was really saying was Obama is against outsourcing our production to communist countries who in return dump slush money into our electoral system to persuade the brainwashed idiots here to cut their own throats. When Beck or Limbaugh talk about 'our' country they don't mean workers, they mean Bush's Base of capitalists who invest in multinational corporations and the whole 'free market' bullshit that has driven us inches from another conservative ideology inspired depression.

LOL

so let me get this straight...the left does not believe the gop is the party of rich white folks, does not believe the gop cares more about the wealthy and corporations and is not in bed with wall street and bankers

Not monolithically, and not even by & large.

It's a pretty stupid, immature thread....ooh! The Prez is hanging out with rich people....thought the left hated rich people!

Many rich people are "the left." I have a lot of leftie friends, and can't think of one offhand who doesn't aspire to make a lot more money.

It's a stupid myth - "the left is anti-wealth" - propogated by the Dixie crowd that believes liberalism = communism.

I should add, I am personally 100% capitalist. "By & large," I greatly admire people who have achieved wealth & success in this country; I don't believe in punitively taxing them, and have often come out in favor of keeping the top tax rate at or below 33% (that's 1/3, Dixie). Most of my life is spent working toward more wealth & greater personal economic prosperity.

All of that said, I am against - and have spoken against many times - the negative effects of corporate money in our political system, in campaigns & in lobbying efforts. I believe systemic change is needed on that front.

you're either being dishonest or you are the board's most delusional retard....

just quick sample:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Thursday said the United States would be ceded to plutocrats and oligarchs if Republicans win next month's election, referring to the flood of pro-GOP corporate election spending.

"This election is also about our democracy," Pelosi said on MSNBC's "Countdown With Keith Olbermann." "If they win -- which I fully intend to stop them from doing -- but if they win, it would mean we are now a plutocracy and oligarchy."

"Whatever these few wealthy, secret, unlimited sources of money are can control our entire agenda," she said.
