Atheists and Agnostics Know the Bible Better than Believers

I got 9. I was not sure about the Jewish sabbath, but the rest were pretty easy.

10/10, I was worried it would be hard.

The reason why you got nailed by the Sabbath question is because Judaism counts days from sun-up to sun-down, meaning from Friday night. I only know this because the Church measures holy days the same way. Receiving Communion on Saturday evening can be regarded as Sunday morning, for example, for those people who have to attend at that time.

In fact, although the United States is one of the most religious developed countries in the world, most Americans scored 50 percent or less on a quiz measuring knowledge of the Bible, world religions and what the Constitution says about religion in public life.

The survey is full of surprising findings.

For example, it's not evangelicals or Catholics who did best - it's atheists and agnostics.

It's not Bible-belt Southerners who scored highest - they came at the bottom.

Those who believe the Bible is the literal word of God did slightly worse than average, while those who say it is not the word of God scored slightly better.

your thread title is totally misleading

the so called survey (where is cypress to decry that this isn't peer reviewed??? oh yeah, this "study" supports his view) was not about the bible alone

more dishonest hackery from you

further, i would bet most of the atheists or agnostics were raised christian, thus, it is no surprise they would know something about religion and likely because they are often on the defensive, they would seek to know intimate details in order to prove their point

I don't sign my posts "Dick" any more that you sign yours as "moron";

That does not work since it was not...

It is not a faith. Moron.

Dick refers to you. The most common name beginning with "R" is "Richard" which stands for "Dick".

Of course atheism is a faith, Dick, especially since these activist have read the Bible. They cannot prove that it is a lie but they have faith that it is.

You know my name is not Richard, stalker.

I can't "disprove" Bigfoot. My lack of belief in the stories is not based on faith. There is no proof to support the belief.

Faith puts the process backwards. Faith is forming a belief and then looking for proof to support it. I don't have faith that there is no God, there simply is no proof to support it.

Atheism is a faith by your logic. Atheists formed a belief that religion is a lie, but have no proof to support that.

Considering that there were two questions about Islam, one about US case law, and potentially the Sabbath question, I'm inclined to agree about the survey not really being a test on the Bible.

:palm:

"Atheists and Agnostics Know the Bible, world religions and what the constitution says about religion in public life Better than Believers" will not fit in the thread title.

Peer review? It's a quiz

If you had read the article you would know it was pointed out that atheist are likely to have been raised with religion. It's not about gathering ammo either.

....
Smith has a theory about why atheists did so well on the quiz - they have thought more about religion than most people.

"Very few people say that they were raised as atheists and agnostics," he explains.

About three out of four were raised as Christians, he says.

"They were raised in a faith and have made a decision to identify themselves with groups that tend to be fairly unpopular," atheists and agnostics, he says.

"That decision presupposes having given some thought to these things," which is strongly linked with religious knowledge, he says.

9/10. pwned that shit. messed up on most popular religion in india. thought they all believed in the elephant face god or the one that's blue with 8 arms or whatever.

it makes sense atheists would do the best, as they are the most worldly, cultured, and intelligent of all the worlds masses. We are the enlightened ones, unlike primitive bible thumping idiots.

People that believe in religion are stupid, they don't understand the world around them, so they look to fairy tales to make it all so simple and easier to understand for their simpleton primitive brains.

So of course a primitive simpleton religious person would not know many of the answers on the quiz. They probably aren't literate enough to read the bible to begin with.

No I'm sure its Richard, Dick.

Maybe you could take your assertions up with the US census bureau as they reckon in 1990 there were about 2 million more Roberts?

Their site is shit - http://www.census.gov/genealogy/names/names_files.html

But the figures are here for 1990 - http://names.mongabay.com/male_names.htm

I suppose this could have changed since 1990 but all the lists of popular birth names appear to place Richard below Robert every year from 1990 to the present.

Stop using facts and logic to prove me wrong. It's offensive.

I got a 10/10 on the quiz...but it really wasn't a "Bible" quiz....rather a quiz that slightly touched on several of the worlds religions. Take the Jewish Sabbath for instance. Most "religious folks" know that it applys to the 7th day of the week but unless they did research outside the Bible they wouldn't necessarily know that it began at 6 pm on Friday. Martin Luther...where was he mentioned in the Bible? Mother Theresa ... can't find her or Catholicism anywhwere in Scripture. If this quiz, or something like it was used for the research to determine the conclusion implied by the title of this thread, a more apt conclusion or title would be: "Atheists and Agnostics Know the religion Better than Believers." But I don't know exactly what research was used.

And let me add:

Even if the research showed that Athiests and Agnostics know the Bible better than believers it wouldn't surprise me. I debate Baptists a lot and can tell you that I know Baptist doctrine better than most Baptists do. For instance, like Catholics believe, the Baptist Manual declares the doctrine of Total Hereditary Depravity....that babies are sinful. Ask a Baptist if they believe that. 99.99999% of them don't, but it is in thier manifesto. Just an example.

10/10 and the question was not about India, it was about Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world by population. 15.3% of the worlds Muslims live there.
