Our heros in blue

In this sort of situation, to go charging into the home without knowing what was going on is stupid.

This sort of monday morning quarterbacking is not any help. The cops knew only that a bank teller passed on what the woman had said. There was no evidence of any foul play. They set up a perimeter to stop the thugs from leaving.

Between the time the police got the call and when the man was spotted in the back yard was around 30 mins. With absolutely no information on what was going on, the police cannot go charging in.

If the situation had been handled differently, and the police when banging on the door right off, and the suspects were killed then, this story would be about the police being so gung-ho.

Thank you for the common sense WB. Presenting the exact senario you presented was what I was thinking about doing as I scrolled down and read each post. I can just see the headline: "Gung Ho cops cause death of family."

seriously? they were given a tip that there was a crime in progress, their response was to wait and see if any violence occured. They wait until the criminals killed the victims. 30 minutes of waiting.

No, their response was to contain the criminals and try to determine what was happening. That is proper police procedure. It may not be what Rambo would do, but this is real life.

They had second hand information. They didn't wait 30 mins to do anything. They just didn't go charging in, guns blazing. They did what they were supposed to do. They set up a perimeter and tried to determine if anything was actually going on.

There was no sign of violence whatsoever.

What would you have had them do? Would you want them to get the call from the bank teller and drive over and knock on the door? Or do you want them to send SWAT in based on the teller's word that she said they were being held hostage, and that she looked terrified?

I have news for you, the wife and girls were already as good as dead. The thugs were going to kill them anyway.

What a joke that statement is. Bunch of cowards let a family die. They should be fined for negligence for their incompetence.

No police pensions or salaries were harmed during the incident
Geesh, you hate anything establishment, don't you! I think I will wait and hear what their orders were before I make judgment calls. I still greatly respect the men and women in blue who like the military are called to put their lives on the line in the line of duty. They follow orders, too. It is very sad that these people had to die, in such a fashion, but I won't condemn all for the mistake of a few and I don't condemn these police officers, either, until I know the whole story.

It is a damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they went busting in and there was no crime, then it would have been condemned, their not going in is now being condemned. It is the very reason I never encouraged my sons to go into police work or the military, both put people in ugly positions that have life long consequences sometimes!

When your dealing with a hostage situation it's never really a good idea to bust right in.

Exactly right. And that is especially true when you have no idea what the situation is.

But to hear tincup tell it, the cops were on a doughnut run while murderers were on a rampage.

I can just imagine their horror when they saw the house go into flames and then later found out the family had been tortured and murdered! I don't imagine any of them feel good about it! My heart goes out to them.

I am sure they had rather have been doing something about it than waiting. But not knowing how many people were in the house, who was armed and who was a hostage, ect ect ect, made it so that only a fool would have them charge in.

yes. an appropriate response would have been to approach the home. If they didn't suspect criminal activity, there is no excuse to not approach the home. If they suspected criminal behavior, there is no excuse not to approach the home. They knew a woman had taken a large sum of money from her bank, told the bank she was being extorted and/or held for ransom.

What sort of sign were they waiting for? What sort of harm would have been done by checking the home?

instead they waited for some action. They waited until the criminals did their deed.

Protect and serve? They had all the info they needed to approach the home. Setting up a perimiter is the proof that knew criminals were in the home.

It's sad that people excuse police for failing to do their job adequately. Everyone knows that after the thugs get their money they'll kill their victims. what were they waiting for if not the death of the victims?

Why did they wait? Why was it more important to catch the crooks than to save the victims?

You people suck

You are clueless. If the cops approached the home, what do you think the criminals insode were going to do? Do you think they would just puttheir hands up in the air and surrender at the sight of a squad car in the parking lot?

What info did they have? They had a bank teller claiming the woman said she was being held hostage. Thats it. There was no sign of any problem at the home. Setting up the perimeter was a precautionary measure.

Tell us, what do you think would have happened if the cops went to the door? Do you think that would have saved the hostages?

If you think the cops did the wrong thing, it is only because you are clueless about police procedures, especially when dealing with a possible hostage situation. Sending the cops in, without knowing what is going on, is the absolute quickest way to get the hostages killed. It has happened time after time.

These cops did the exact right thing. Rather than looking for some reason to blame the cops, why not blame the actual criminals who murdered these people?
