FACT CHECK: Islam already lives near ground zero

You gotta be shittin' me. This community center is on "hallowed ground".???

I'm still awaiting a NeoCon to explain to me the exact radius of ground zero "hallowed ground", in blocks or feet.

You can point it out to me on this handy map.

"When we speak of Ground Zero as hallowed ground, what we mean is that it belongs to those who suffered and died there"

Muslims died there as well. They also fought for America in the 2 wars that followed.

Because guess what? They're Americans. America was attacked on 9/11; not American Christians exclusively, or American Jews exclusively, or American Muslims exclusively. Americans were attacked.

And Americans can build anything they want, as long as they get the proper permits for it.

It's not about "American Christian's". It's about "Location matters. Especially this location. Ground Zero is the site of the greatest mass murder in American history -- perpetrated by Muslims of a particular Islamist orthodoxy in whose cause they died and in whose name they killed."

Again for the perpetually knee-jerk dunder heads....no one objects to Islam's right to build a mosque or practice their faith...only to location in "this particular situation"!!!

Well, since the building where the Mosque is going to be in was damaged by the Sept 11th attacks I'd qualify that as part of Ground Zero. To be clear I think they have the Constitutional right to build it and it's not a big issue to me but real sick of Liberal windbags talking about it being 2 blocks away when the building was actually damaged in the attacks. You don't think two jet airliners bringing down the 2 tallest buildings didn't damage stuff out 2 blocks away? Talk about shitty math.

A piece of the fuselage from the plane hijacked by Muhammad Atta (the leader), landed on this building, crashing through to the ground floor. Think about that... a piece of the actual "missile" from the "victory blow" against the Great Satan. To alQaeda, this is a historically significant site. This marks a key "point of attack" from their perspective. It's not a coincidence the building was damaged, it's certainly not a coincidence a part of Atta's jet landed in this location. This place has significance to them.

And yes, 2 blocks in NYC basically means "2 buildings" away!

You still don't get it. The Muslims in question ARE Americans, like any other American.

Would you have an issue with a McDonald's on the "hallowed ground"?

This is no different from the prejudice that led to Japanese internment nearly 70 years ago. The belief (hysteria) was that they were Japanese first, and American second.

Is that what you believe? Why are these Americans different from other Americans...simply for their religious belief?

yes, because their religion includes what we would consider polticial beliefs which are inconsistent with a constitutional republic or a democracy, whichever we are today.

The fact that fuselage from the plane damaged the building makes it "part of" ground zero!

You don't get it~~~

It was not McDonalds employee's that flew the planes into the Tower's claiming victory for McDonalds!!! If that had been the case, then YES I would have a problem with a McD's being erected.

Obama is a muslim from the muslim point of view. In islam if your father is a muslim, you are a muslim. And if you convert, you are still muslim, but one who is in state of sin and must be killed. Unless you are on a taquiyah mission like obama.

And it was not American Muslims that flew the planes into the WTC either.

How do you know that none of the hijackers worked at McDonalds? Most were Saudi's...would you object to Saudi Arabian American business owners constructing something there?

You know what? They were all guys...are you against men building something there? Should it be only female-owned around ground zero?

hey if ya really wana piss em off, just let em build it, then use eminent domain to take it back. lol

She's not stupid at all. I know some JWs and some Mormons, and the JWs especially can be very hostile about other religions. Some of my in-laws are JWs and I've heard their comments firsthand. My husband and I have a friend who's a JW and he was shunned because of something he did that would be inconsequential in any other religion. You think Muslims are extremists, yet what kind of religion would have you shun your own family if you didn't toe their line.

You don't know the private side of Romney, Reid, the Osmonds, etc. to comment with any certainty on how they practice their faith.

I didn't call her stupid....I asked if she thought "these people stupid and below her".....
Its time you learn a little reading comprehension, so you don't keep accusing others of things they didn't say in the first place.
and please stop apoligizing for the barbarians we call Muslims...
They behead their captives, stone, enslave, disfigure, and murder their women at will, taught to lie to the infidels and idiots like you, and murder innocents for the sake of terrorizing and to further their religious goals....they are throwbacks to the dark ages that make no contribution to civilization.....is that too melodramatic or an exaggeration?

It doesn't get seperated that way...

American Japanese would have been no more welcome to build a shrine or memeorial at Pearl Harbor!

Getting absurd does not a point make except that you are being absurd.

Krauthammer in his commentary made the point about what makes a location "hallowed".

It's not absurd. In the non-prejudiced mind, the analogies are perfect.

You're basically saying American Muslims are less than American, because -well, ya know, they've got that "Muslim thing."

It's ugly.

Presumably, we've moved beyond the bigotry of 1940s wartime america....or, at least liberals have.

Very telling that you empathisize, and are understanding of the discrimination japanese americans faced.

Personally, I wouldn't give a crap where japanese-americans wanted to build a shinto shrine if we were at war with the nation of japan. As americans, they have the same rights as me.

Is there a reason that you conflate the treatment of japanese-americans in the 1940s, with muslim-americans today in Manhattan? Why do you think it's "understandable" they would need to face the same bias, that japanese-americans faced in 1942? I don't understand why you are emphathizing with a historical analogy that was one of america's darkest chapters in civil rights.

P.S. Park 51 is not a 'shrine". Try using a dictionary if you are unfamiliar with the definitions and meanings of english words.

Park 51 is a community center that would have a prayer room.
