They just alienated the majority of Jews. At the time of Jesus's ministry, only about 5% of Jews were religious; it was the bureaucrat-priests of the 'Temple State' that were threatened by him. There is a lot more diversity among Jewish sects than most are aware of; the Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox are maybe 10%-15% of Jews in Israel. Their own self-isolation and racism severely limits their power these days, since the 'mini-Enlightenment' in Jewish culture in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
