The Queen Returns

First off there is zero comparisson between Hillary and Laura Bush as first ladies. Can you recall anything Laura that was really political in nature other than saying she supported her husband?

I always liked Laura and didn't hold against her the fact that she married that boob. I read her book recently, along with Hillary's and Palin's books. You'll be surprised to hear that Laura and Hillary have a lot of similarities in their backgrounds, actions, interests, etc. Also both woman came off very well in the telling of their own stories. They're both intelligent with a cute, self-deprecating humor, and neither spent a lot of time trashing other people. They liked and spoke well of each other. I probably leaned just a bit more toward Laura because she's like me, an introverted bookworm. :D

That aside, Laura made a lot of political and nonpolitical trips. She went to Africa a number of times and she took a daughter with her. She met with leaders and their wives. I was surprised to read how many trips she made, because I don't recall hearing about them when she was First Lady.

Just my opinion but maybe Laura didn't say a lot of political things because she was on the opposite side of her husband in a number of issues, being pro-choice was one of them and supporting gay marriage was another.

She was pretty much in the background. During the campaign Hillary said you were getting two for one with her and Bill and then when she took the lead in writing the health care bill that put her right on the front line. I'm not passing judgement here just saying those two were completely different so of course coverage of them was going to be different.

I agree she was in the background but why? She did a lot of different things while bush was in office and they didn't get into the news. If you find it hard to believe she was so active, read her book.

I'm sure there is partisanship involved in criticising Michelle but her husband isn't all that popular at the moment and the economy is not doing well. There is nothing wrong with her wanting to take her kids overseas

People taking out their discontent with Obama on his wife and kid is just mean-spirited. (It was only one kid on the trip, but that's neither here nor there.) Laura took a lot of her pals on hiking and camping trips but that never hit anybody's radar, and she did it while her husband was losing support over an unpopular war.

It was probably a great experience for them. But can you make the argument considering what's going on economic wise in our country it shows somewhat of a tin ear politically? I think you can.

I don't hold Laura's trips against her, or Michelle's against her. You write that Michelle's trip shows a political tin ear because of the country's economy. Would you also say the same about Laura taking friends on trips during a war when some families were losing their loved ones overseas?

There wasn't as many people unemployed then, and don't forget that your god said that "WE ALL HAVE TO DO WITH LESS". People don't see him doing with less. Or his wife.

So it's all about how many people were unemployed? How about, it didn't look good for the bushes to be gallivanting around while the country was at war and people were dying?

What other pleasure trip abroad did Michelle take, or what activities is she doing that make you think she's not doing with less? For heaven's sake the woman buys her clothes in stores I've shopped at! She's not dripping in designer duds like Nancy or Jackie were.

You like to read those political biographies. :) That's impressive. I love to read but just have the most trouble trying to read a politicians self-story.

A difference to me is that overall Laura seems like a much quiter type person, a little more introverted I think you said. Whether Michelle is more outgoing or not she has garnered much press attention particularly regarding her fashion style. Lord knows I do not read Vogue or any of those type of magazines but I see them at the store and Michelle and seem to make the cover of quite a few. (this is neither here nor there but I do think she is an attrative woman so I get why these magazines are into her.) So it just seems anything she does is going to get more attention. Obviously sometimes that can be good sometimes not as much and it looks like the reaction to her trip sort of fits the latter description.

I'd like to know where the $400,000 came from.

I also think it's hilarious that this conservative blogger/newspaper is criticizing an entitlement cut, when most of them are all about getting rid of entitlements.

A mere 7 years worth of salary for the average American...all so the Queen could console a friend....

How can we have a gaggle of negroes gallavanting around on the public dime? This is like an abominable inversion of god's pre-determinant racialist hierarchy.

What's really idiotic is your citing an Obama-hating conservative pundit who can't show any facts and figures from a reliable source, yet you expect me to take the comments as gospel. Hoft himself pinched the article from The Daily Mail, as if an British paper has the inside on how US government trips are financed.

"A conservative estimate..."

"The exact cost of the trip is unclear ...."

Give me a break. When your boy left office he had the country with one foot in bankruptcy court and the other on a banana peel. How much did the taxpayers spend flying bush back and forth to Crawford, given that he took the most vacations ever for a sitting president? Criticizing Michelle for her trip is ludicrous.

I've never supported Bush.

I use to say that he was the worst Pres ever. Until Obama came along.

Obamas mouth set the standard. That's what my remark was referring to.

Common sense would dictate an end result that didn't draw attention to his indulgences as has become.

You still haven't shown how the Obamas out-did the bushes as far as indulgences. How many days has Obama spent in his Chicago house?

Look at the facts. reagan, Bush 1, and bush 2 have Carter, Clinton and Obama beat hands'-down in vacation days.

Just to be a smart ass do you have that broken down in percentages since you are comparing 20 years to 14? :)
