The language used by some comedians is not appropriate in most contexts. It is stupid to pretend that white people should feel free to say n#%$^& because a comedian does. We don't feel free to use other vulgar words from their routine. And no there is no reason that comedians language should comply with what is considered appropriate in all places.

The problem is that stupid white people think they can use the word all they want in a joke and then fall back on the excuse that comedians use it. No one expects other parts of their routines should be appropriate in all cases. I mean, go talk about your first experiences in sucking dick in graphic detail (Richard Pryor) and see how it goes over. I am guessing, some people will be offended. But they are just being uptight, right?

I remember the Richard Prior Routine you are referencing. His point was that he realize it was wrong for him or any other black person to use the word equally in describing black people. The word is not acceptable as use to describe blacks in general as what Dr. Laura was attempting to say on the program.

I don't think there should be a law, but when you call someone a nigger and get your fucking head bashed in, that is law of the jungle. Yeah right. Again, comedians use lots of words that are not deemed appropriate for polite conversation. Especially, the ones you are talking about. Again, would Laura like the c word thrown around at her house? I doubt it.

It is nearly universal for people to see self-deprecating humor as less offensive. We can say things bad about ourselves without it being taken as an attack. Do you think Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy would have been successful doing redneck jokes? No, but Foxworthy was mostly due to rednecks.

It is similar with a racial epithet. When it is said by a target there is no assumption that it is meant as an attack. I honestly don't understand why you would find that confusing.
