The empty promises of progressivism

The paradox of socialism: they need the poor to exist. They promise to help them, but it's the other way around: if they really helped them, they would stop being poor. Without the poor, socialism isn't needed.

I've always explained it this way:

A Republican / Conservative is walking along the shore of a lake. He sees a man struggling in the water. Running to a nearby house, he asks if he can borrow some rope and a float to save the man promising to return it later. At the lake he tosses the rope and float out to the man, but it lands a bit short. The Republican / Conservative shouts, "Swim for it!"

A Democrat / Leftist is walking along the shore of a lake. He sees a man struggling in the water. Running to a nearby house he goes in the garage and takes some rope and a float, knowing he's doing the right thing. At the lake he tosses the float out tied to the rope. It lands on top of the struggling man injuring him on the head. The Democrat / Leftist waves to the man as he drops the rope on the shore, "You don't have to thank me!" He then strolls off looking for another good deed to do.
