European and Asian makers have refined small diesels (1.0–1.6L turbo units) for decades with excellent reliability and 50+ mpg potential. The shift away from them lately is more about economics, dieselgate scandals, stricter global emissions, cheaper EVs/hybrids, and changing buyer preferences, not some insurmountable technical barrier.In short: It's been done at scale successfully.
