Judge blocks parts of Arizona immigration law

I understand that but what do you think the odds of say a British immigrant in Arizona being asked to prove their residency status vs say an American/Arizona citizen of hispanic decent.

How would you feel knowing that because you are of hispanic decent you will be targeted to prove your citizenship while your white neighbors get a pass? Wouldn't you feel that was racist?

If he's driving a vehicle and gets stopped for an infraction, I would say the odds are pretty high.

My mistake, it was El Kabong.

You actually find a cartoon like that offensive? Are you a horse with a mask and guitar? No, I had no idea anyone was actually offended by Quick Draw McGraw.

You might consider growing thicker skin, so as to avoid being offended so easily.

Many Hispanics find stereotypcial cartoon characters like El Kabong Speedy Gonzales etc. offensive.

Many African-Americans likewise are insulted by demeaning characterizations in media.

Is it possible you are not aware of these facts?

At any rate, I take you at your word.

I'd say that it would be nearly 100% for the Brit. When they heard the accent they would wonder if they were legally in the country. And if my skin was darker than white... (maybe it is, eh) I'd just carry my driver's license like I have since I've gotten it and have no fear.

If a white person is pulled over without identification, they start off under some "suspicion", per the law there is a few more steps they'd have to go before they got to checking on their status, but in reality they'd get there if it became obvious they were not here legally.

I guess they're now the ones being racist; because they obviously think that Hispanics only come in one color.

No but it would be requiring a US citizen to prove his citizenship status cause he/she looks hispanic. The law may not state so but that is the sum affect. I question the constitutionality of that.

Then explain why none of my extended family has been asked if they are illegals?

And there were cartoons poking fun at southerners.

And there were cartoons poking fun at surfers or hippies.

And there were cartoons poking fun at french, swedish, british, or any other accents.

And there were cartoons poking fun at businessmen.

And there were cartoons poking fun at farmers & ranchers.

And there were cartoons poking fun at women.

Should the entire world be offended??

Jeez, its a freakin cartoon. If El Kabong and Speedy Gonzalez were the biggest offenses you faced, you have had a cushy life.

I cannot take being offended by a silly cartoon like El Kabong seriously.

AGAIN, what could possably lead a police officer to have "reasonable suspision" about a person's legal status in the Untied States?

What basis could be used other than shit that is violative of the 14th...?

It comes down to this question, and noone can answer it!

You're not being realistic here Winter. Do you really think that this law will equally target white people and challenge them to verify their citizenship status? If you do believe that then your belief that this law is not racist is understandable. Naive as hell but understandable.

Let me give you a what if scenario. My state borders Canada. What if we had large numbers of Canadians illegally immigrating here? Now suppose the State of Ohio passes a law similiar to AZ's and assume that white people are a minority in Ohio. Now how should I feel about being trageted and having to prove my citizenship status upon the demand of a police officer who has some poorly defined reasonable cause? Should I not feel singled out as a minority citizen? Should I not feel that is unfair? Should I not feel that is discriminatory and therefore racist?

Only if your an idiot; because if you're stopped for a traffic violation, asked for your drivers liscense, and then produce it, there is no further reason to suspect you of being an illegal white Canadian.

No one is asking you to be sensitive to the issue. I was merely informing yoiu that it exists.

Your perception is not the only one.

Your example shows the policemnan to be racist, but not the law itself.

I do not believe this law is racist. I believe its bullshit mainly because of it requiring US citizens to carry their "papers" to prove they are citizens.

It requires that someone prove they are innocent.

If you are approached by a Police Officer, and asked to provide identification, and are unable to; you are going to be detained, until it can be determined who you are.
A State ID or a Drivers Liscense solves that problem, EVERY TIME.

At least I got my answer on why El Ofendido Una considers the law to be racist.

I have not insulted you, why insult me?

You have no basis for interpreting motivation in discusssing this issue. If you are unable to debate without using ad hominem attacks, then perhaps you should refrain from engaging in this topic.

Again: "FOR ANY LAWFUL CONTACT MADE BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL OR AGENCY OF THIS STATE OR A COUNTY, CITY, TOWN OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF THIS STATE WHERE REASONABLE SUSPICION EXISTS THAT THE PERSON IS AN ALIEN WHO IS UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES, A REASONABLE ATTEMPT SHALL BE MADE, WHEN PRACTICABLE, TO DETERMINE THE IMMIGRATION STATUS OF THE PERSON. THE PERSON'S IMMIGRATION STATUS SHALL BE VERIFIED..."

The issue lies in the interpretation of "reasonable suspicion".

The law makes it CLEAR when a person can be questioned about their legal status: You quoted the un amended version.

Not under the provisions of SB 1070. For example, a New Mexico driver's license would not be accepted as proof of citizenship or legal immigration status.
