i do not think that we can succeed in helping to form a stable, acceptable to the afghan people, government in Afghanistan

we would have to at least double and maybe triple the number of troops there to even achieve a moderate peace and train enough afghans to take over from

the missing key, like in vietnam, is a stable acceptable government

part of the problem is that there is no real national feeling among afghans

this is like iraq where there are factions (warlords) that want to keep their fiefs and do not want a central government or western thoughts of equality between men and women

it would be nice, but i no longer think that it is possible - especially within the year that bho has limited himself to

oh well - another several hundred billion down the drain and too many lives

The war in Afghanistan is critical to international security.

while i used to agree with that position, i no longer think that a positive solution is possible - maybe what we need to do is throw more support towards Pakistan

the alternative to throw a lot more support towards afghanistan and it may be turning into a black hole

We should take everyone currently deployed to Iraq, aside from a small training element, and send them to Afghanistan, and tell them to fuck up everything in sight that isn't a designated civilian.

I would say that the one important thing about both Iraq and Afghanistan, is that many of the people can identify with the leaders, and view them as supporting a worthwhile cause. This was never the case in the shitty, corrupt, autocratic South Vietnamese government. Even in South Korea, Syngman Rhee was viewed as out-of-touch and autocratic, but the people nevertheless supported him considering the larger picture.

Obama is employing the same strategy in Afghanistan as Johnson employed in Vietnam, and we will likely see the same results... maybe not as many casualties, but we can't win.

The day Obama was elected, I called for a complete and immediate withdrawal from Afghanistan AND Iraq... that was what Obama promised the wacko lefties, and that is what he should have delivered. He hasn't done anything remotely close to that, instead, he has sent another 50,000 young people to risk their life on a boondoggle we can't win.

Now, these wars were the single biggest complaint Liberals had against Bush, whenever they start reeling off their well-rehearsed and familiar anti-Bush rant, that is the FIRST thing they mention. So it really baffles me how the Liberals have completely given Obama a pass on this. Why isn't Cyndi Shehan disrupting the Obama's vacations with 'sit ins' and where are Howard Dean, Al Gore, and Dennis Kusinich with the crazy-eyed screeching speeches? Where is Natalie Maines?

Funny how the war has somehow become forgotten, isn't it? Oh, the War Against Fox News is raging as strong as ever in the hearts of the Liberals, but let's not discuss the REAL wars going on, that might call attention to the fact that Obama basically lied to the people to get elected. He told you he would end the war in Iraq... he hasn't. He told you he would go after Osama Bin Laden... does anyone remember who that is anymore? Nothing this man told us, with regard to Iraq or Afghanistan, has come to be. Instead, he has meandered around and sent a halfhearted representation of an insurgence, and replaced a General because he didn't like the warranted complaints about his leadership or strategy.

So now, let's talk about what is going to happen, when we leave Afghanistan... The Taliban will quickly resume power and alQaeda will undoubtedly resume operations. This should all start to transpire about the time Iran gets a nuke, and the abandoned Pakistan government will also likely fall to radical Islamics, absent the presence of American protection and support. I wouldn't suggest planning a vacation to the Holy Land, unless you actually LIKE nuclear winters. Here in America, where Liberals have decided to have an 'open door policy' on our southern border, we can expect alQaeda cells to be smuggling nukes into America within the next decade. I recommend that you look for a place to live which is not an urban population center, because that is certainly going to be the targets when it all goes down. Oh, and buy canned goods!

But yeah... I say, bring 'em home, we can't win!

We either need our troops to have unfettered ability to kick total ass or bring them home... To think our men an women are out there being killed because of political double dealing is infuriating and sickening.

The WikiLeaks files make it plain: Islamabad is the Taliban’s faithful ally. Tunku Varadarajan argues it’s time for the U.S. to stop paying money to Pakistan so they can help our enemies kill us. Plus, the seven most shocking secrets from the WikiLeaks files.

The latest gaudy gush from WikiLeaks will leave the White House, the Pentagon, and the State Department soggy and irritable for many days. But one aspect of the leak—that concerning Pakistan’s brazenly unstinting support for the insurgency in Afghanistan—should be news to absolutely no one.

It was for the British and the Soviets.

Yes but the US isn't responsible, by itself, for international security. Were responsible for US security. The real question is, is the near state of anarchy in Afghanistan represent a clearn and present danger to US national security?

I agree. Would withdrawal allow for the same powers who brought us 9/11 to come back, though?

Stick to tactics Cap'n Billy.....strategy is not your cup of tea. ;)
How so? It's a pretty simple strategy, and it worked in Iraq. Granted the cultural differences between Iraq and Afghanistan are pretty significant.

As for it's effects on our national security, I can say it would be pretty significant, though not in the near future. Afghanistan is a gateway country between China and the middle east.
