Whoopi Goldberg has come under fire for remarks she made in defense of Mel Gibson after several of his obscene, racially-charged rants leaked online.

"There has been a lot of hassle ... in the media recently about moi because I had the audacity to say that I had some personal time with Mel that goes over years and years and said that I did not think of him as a racist," Whoopi began on 'The View' today.

"If you had actually watched the show, you would have heard us say, and you would have heard me specifically say, 'I don't condone this. I don't think this is right, I don't think this is smart. But here's the piece of information that I have. My experience tells me that this is not a racist,'" she continued.

"Being a black woman, you'd think you would give me a little bit of leeway to have some feelings if I was around a racist."

She's under fire for not cowing to the Left's tactic. I'm not a fan of hers by any stretch but I always appreciate a person willing to stand on their own convictions instead of following along like a sheep. :good4u:

Would that be a gaggle of sheep, or a pack?

:D

I believe the correct term is a murder of sheep.

And so Whoopi banged Mel? Interesting. Maybe Mel has like reverse John Meyerism.
I think in anger he reverts back to screaming the crap he heard as a kid that scared him the most. It should be actions, not drunken angry shouting rants that we should judge by. Nobody wants to have their whole life judged by their worst moments...

I don't think he's a racist... I do think he's a mean fucking drunk! I think her relationship with him and her being black makes her a fair person to judge his "hateful racial comments". I don't think she should have though...

Mel dug his own public opinion grave. Sad? Yes! He took a devoted wife of 30 years for granted; betrayed her and their children in the most public and humilitaing of ways...he deserves all the public scorn he gets. He took a great career and flushed it for his fans.

As to the tramp he reportedly abused, it was wrong for him to have hit a woman. That said they both got a lil' bit of karama...but it's the kids that always ultimately suffer in these things...did you know that she did the whole baby out of wed lock thing with actor Timmothy Dalton too? She was married to Dalton when she bagan her affair with Mel...yeah she's as bad as Gibson?

I agree. What i heard most was the rage that comes from extreme pain. Poor guy. Did some vile things come out? yes. do i think he would do any of them? no.

I don't pay much attention to any of these Hollyweird types, even the ones that I agree with politically. Its the same with professional athletes, politicians and anyone who's got a little bit of fame and power. They become self-important and let it get to their head. :gives:

How would ANY of us like to live in a world where something you said in the heat of the moment, could be recorded and played for the whole world, and you could be condemned for it without even having a chance to defend yourself?

I have been as angry as Mel was before, I have said some awful things... maybe not as awful as the things he said, but pretty damn bad... only, I am not a celebrity, and a recording of me having a fit of rage, is not going to destroy my livelihood forever. Is it just me, or does it seem that Mel is kinda taking it in the shorts here... he was mad, that is obvious, he said awful things, that is obvious... but he wasn't giving a fucking press conference or speaking to an audience! He thought he was having a private one-on-one conversation with someone... We don't know what buttons SHE may have pushed to set him off, we don't know what other mitigating factors may have been involved, he sounds drunk... does he have an alcohol problem? How many of you have said something regretful while intoxicated? Especially if you think no one else is listening but the person you're talking to... I'm not trying to defend what he said, or give him a pass... ID is right, he has created his own mess, but I kind of feel like he was set up here, and this doesn't really deserve our undivided attention as much as it seems to be.

Of course, the Left-wing Media is all too happy to give us 24/7 reporting on the latest in the Mel Gibson Saga... to avoid talking about the actual NEWS of the day! The Blogo trial inches closer and closer to the White House, and MSNBC concentrates more and more on the perils of Mel! Go figure?

Howard Stern has been playing Mel's racist rants the last few days.
Censored transcripts don't do it justice,
you have to hear Mel screaming at his baby Momma.

How could Mel do four movies with Danny Glover
with his Limbaughesque hatred for Black people?

Whoopi will defend anyone in the movie biz. She debated some woman on a news show in defense of Roman Polanski, saying that he didn't rape that girl, or at least it wasn't "rape, rape..." Don't know why she does it, though...

Here's the thing though Dix...he is famous so of course he's gonna be under the microscope. He did make his own bed and now he has to lie in it. He was most certainly set up (she recorded him wihout his knowledge). Her motives were most likely to get money. That said, he did admit to hitting her, and he did prove her case abou hist being unbalanced. Mel is getting what he deserves with regards to both cost and the public humiliation...after all look at the public humiliation he caused his legitimate family and devoted wife of 30 years.

All and all this may be his bottom and for an alcoholic that is an important place to be if you are ever gonna get better...so redemption and renewel can still be Mel's.

I agree, I just think... I don't know... it just seems a bit 'sleazy' to hang him with this... ya know? He wasn't making these comments in a bar or out in public somewhere, he wasn't giving an interview, or even talking drunk out of his head to a cop on video... he was having a 'private' phone convo... yet it's all over the Internet, all over the news, all over the world for everyone to hear... it just seems a bit over the top and unfortunate. Like I said, not defending what he said or his actions, and I can certainly fault him for the other stuff he has pulled, but this just seems a little unethical, to take his private phone conversation and run around playing it for the world.

I always liked Mel in his movies, and thought he was a fairly good actor, I guess it's just hard to see someone like that being mean and hateful. It reminds me of the book I read by one of Bing Crosby's kids, describing life in the Crosby family... We all knew Bing as a funny and witty personality, who was very well liked by the public... his daughter says he would get drunk and mad, and beat them with sacks of oranges! Hard to imagine Bing Crosby being that way... but that's what she said.
