Trump says US has seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela

Armed conflict =/= War
War is a political concept for large-scale conflict, while armed conflict is the broader, legal term used in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) to cover any situation with significant fighting, whether between states (international armed conflict) or within one (non-international armed conflict, like civil wars) involving organized groups. Think of it this way: all wars are armed conflicts, but not all armed conflicts are declared wars, with "armed conflict" triggering legal protections even when states avoid the word "war".

So the US was fighting with an oil tanker?

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the U.S. has seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela amid mounting tensions with the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Trump is a fascist.

What gives him that right? He is working hard to get the protections of being a wartime president. Human lives are the currency he spends freely.

It is obviously a violation of the US Constitution.

Trump confirmed to reporters that U.S. forces seized a “large tanker.” Asked what would happen to the oil aboard the tanker, Trump said, “Well, we keep it, I guess.”

:rofl2:

I suppose we should consider ourselves lucky he didn't just blow it up.

Trump will park it at Maro Lago.

And international law.

Really? How so?

Hardly.

So we're at war?

No. Maritime law is far more nuanced than that. Spain and England centuries ago weren't at war and England was taking prizes. The US in the earliest days of the nation was taking prizes.

Hell, on Nov 6 1941--a full month before the US entered the war with Germany--the US Navy took a German merchant ship as a prize.

The crew of the USS Omaha even got shares of the prize money for it, as maritime law required.

So, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about here.
Monroe Doctrine, you guys.
Which leads to this:
And now we're here.
Y'all know Teddy Roosevelt fought in Cuiba, right? Yah.
What do you really know about American History n stuff, seriously?

We mostly feel horrible for our militarily aggressive and slavery years. The fact that we did those things does not make it right, nor dioes it supply precedence. You are not thinking well.

Trump is a fascist.
That’s got to get him his Peace Award

It’s all a classic Wag the Dog, don’t look at Trump ‘s inability to end the Ukrainian War as promised, look here, Venezuela is America’s biggest threat and Trump the tough guy is dealing with it, sells on Fox

No, the US is engaged in a Guerre de Course. In this case it's a merchant "war" of economics that is short of an actual, hot, fighting war. These things aren't clear cut. They're messy and for some reason--likely historical and general illiteracy on the Left--those complaining about this can't grasp how real, actual, politics between nations often results in stuff like this.

You got to tell us now Venezuela posses a major security threat to the US’s security?

It’s all a deflection, as said, classic Wag the Dog
Commandeered Apartment Complexes in The United States.
Scoff all you want, that was Venezuelan Paramiltary shitheads infiltrating our borders, and fuck you.
You know Jack Shit, and would defend nothing. We are not the same.

More like liberal arts majors seeped in Leftist political rhetoric who have never actually studied anything approaching reality can't grasp that international politics are not some clean-cut thing that follows a hard and fast set of rules. They are messy and the rules are at best guidelines.

I defer to mah previous post on that one. Hope it was in here, anyway.
Also, the U.S. Navy does have supreme hegemony.
Yes, the United States is the biggest military power in the world.
The goal is to use that for peace, ok?
This may be too complicated for simplified Commie mush minds, but yeah.

Commerce raiding is a form of naval warfare used to destroy or disrupt logistics of the enemy on the open sea by attacking its merchant shipping, rather than engaging its combatants or enforcing a blockade against them.

Serious question... What are you doing?

trump's claim is that the oil in the tanker is fair game because it's oil from countries we have economic sanctions against.

This would be a perfect event in which to have a president who can actually be believed when he says something.

But we don't.

We can't believe a word that comes out of his fat, puckered, lie-puking mouth

Says the guy who thinks it's ok for Trump to take an oil tanker during peacetime. No war. No armed conflict. Just thief.

Seriously? What are you doing? This is low for you.
