My father was there in WWII also. He didn't talk much about it.
They took turns dumping the garbage in weighted bags beyond the reef. They would toss in a couple of grenades and pick up the fish that floated up then they would have a fish fry. By the time my dad arrived in the Philippines there wasn't much fighting going on.

My father was there when they rescued the survivors of the Bataan Death March. He stopped at most of the small Islands over there.

My dad helped run radar installations. On the train going to California he met an officer who was also headed to the Philippines and the guy liked him and put him under his command at a radar unit.
 
That must have been heart wrenching seeing the condition those survivors were in. 😪

They were angry and in very bad shape, they felt the main attention was the fight in Europe, and they were left deserted, to die.
The movie "The Great Raid" is based on the rescue.
