The FBI arrested a man on Thursday who investigators believe planted pipe bombs near the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters the night before the 2021 US Capitol riot, according to two law enforcement sources.

The arrest follows an almost five-year investigation to uncover the identity of the bomber who has only been seen in grainy surveillance video shrouded in a hoodie, gloves and a face mask.

The investigation faced new scrutiny under the Trump administration, as some allies of the president have fixated on the pipe bomber’s identity as potential proof that the January 6 riot at the US Capitol was an “inside job.” One of those allies, Dan Bongino, is now the deputy director of the FBI.

Before taking the FBI job, Bongino said on his podcast, “I believe the FBI knows the identity of this pipe bomber on January 6, four years ago, and just doesn’t wanna tell us ‘cause it was an inside job.” He also suggested that if the “inside job” allegation were proven to be true, the FBI would claim the bombs were a “training exercise.”

I'm curious if the name will be released when it's found it was a White Nationalist traitor and not Bondingo's "inside job". LOL

Brian Cole was identified as the suspect in custody, according to two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter....

...The mystery of the pipe bomber’s identity helped fuel some conspiracy theories, including the notion that the government had set up supporters of President Donald Trump who stormed the Capitol. Last month, the FBI debunked another one that suggested the bombs were planted by a former Capitol Police officer.

While Trump pardoned Jan. 6 rioters, including those who attacked law enforcement officers, on his first day back in office this year, the language of the pardons did not extend to the individual who planted pipe bombs near the RNC and the DNC.

John Richter, the former Biden and Clinton staffer whom the FBI wrongfully questioned about the Jan. 6 pipe bomb case, told NBC News on Thursday that he’s received a bunch of texts from friends joking about the arrest of the actual suspect.
