I don't think the pope or the archbishop of Canterbury would have complained if Hitler had been assassinated.

As a matter of secular law, murder is punishable by prison time.

The question is whether murder is objectively wrong. For that you need some kind of standard beyond human opinion or social convention. That's what the American lawyers at Nuremberg did - they pointed to a higher natural law that supersedes national laws.

The news is like a gossiper at best. They print headlines and stories designed to grab attention, and even make up stuff to be attention grabbing.

If someone murders a family in their home, that is news. If someone helps their kid learn to tie his shoes, that is not news.

Someone for a variety of reasons might make the news (I even did once, though they changed what I said!). "If it bleeds, it leads." is a guiding principle of what makes the news. They will print what grabs the attention, even if they have to make it up.

Plane crash? On the news. Someone buying an airline ticket and boarding their flight, not news.
