WASHINGTON — Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele says Afghanistan is "a war of Obama's choosing" and the conflict "is not something the United States has actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in," comments that drew an immediate rebuke from Republicans and Democrats.

They still believe that, even after the Wall Street crash, even after the BP oil well blew, that we should just keep a hands-off attitude.

They think we should keep doing what we did for most of the last decade leading up to the recession.

Basically their attitude is, you’re on your own.

Now, here’s the problem, and again, I don’t question that a lot of them sincerely subscribe to this view.

Here’s the problem. We’ve already tried these ideas.

Remember, we tried them for eight years.

We tried them for a good part of the last decade.

We know where they led us.

Because there has never been a leak of this size at this depth, stopping it has tested the limits of human technology.

That is why just after the rig sank, I assembled a team of our nation’s best scientists and engineers to tackle this challenge, a team led by Dr. Steven Chu, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and our nation’s Secretary of Energy. Scientists at our national labs and experts from academia and other oil companies have also provided ideas and advice.

Already, this oil spill is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced, and unlike an earthquake or a hurricane, it is not a single event that does its damage in a matter of minutes or days.

The millions of gallons of oil that have spilled into the Gulf of Mexico are more like an epidemic, one that we will be fighting for months and even years, but make no mistak.

We will fight this spill with everything we’ve got for as long it takes. We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused, and we will do whatever’s necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover from this tragedy.

First thing ya gotta learn is right wingers don't believe in society. To them there is no social contract for a civilized society. They are going to fight you every step you try to take, no matter what it is, so I say forget them. Secondly, BP doesn't have enough money to cover the damage, present or future. Not even is you seize their assets. 20 billion, pffft a drop in the bucket compared to the damage that will haunt the Gulf for centuries.

Sure glad I'm not in your shoes.
