The fact is, I can accept reformed alcoholics (quitters!), addicts, criminals, misogynists, and whatnot, but not reformed politicians. If you fuck up in politics, you should be turned out and not voted back in, at least not at the same level of power. There are always plenty of people out there to replace the likes of Byrd and Thurmond. Unless there was serious risk of electing someone worse, I really can't see why they went to such lengths to keep getting re-elected...

But it will be nice to see people who condemned Trent Lott start praising the great, late Byrd for being such a great public servant...

The problem is, Byrd didn't run for president or challenge LBJ that year, otherwise Reid is dumb enough to say something that stupid. Actually, Reid has said such stupid things that its looking like Nevada will be tossing him this next election for a better gamble/odds/whore/substitute own Nevada vice

Personally I think that people like Byrd and Thurmond who can admit they were wrong and embrace change deserve a certain amount of credit for that.

And in the coming days Byrd's past will certainly be examined and his ties to the KKK and his opposition to the CRA can be blasted.

This is about how civility and decorum have become a thing of the past, mainly due to "family values" Righties who find it impossible to keep a civil tongue in their head, even for a miniscule span of time like 24 hours.

Please. This is just false "perfectionism". People who believe that those they associate with are somehow due a pedestal will always be disappointed.

The man lived a full life, he died at 92.

Never ever going to admit I'm right about anything, no matter how small, are ya?

There was a time when the people of this country knew that it was just a good ol fashioned courtesy to not speak ill of the recently deceased.

I never said ANYTHING about Byrd being "perfect".

I simply pointed out that during "the good ol days" that so many in this country continually whine about missing, people actually held their tongues in deference to those mourning the deceased...apparently even that tiny courtesy is too much to ask of todays "family values' Righties.

Apparently Righties want a return to those "good ol days" in every aspect except when it comes to affording those you disagree with a little "R-E-S-P-E-C-T."

You would have been right if you hadn't tried to play the partisan card. The reality is when Rs die we have cheering from the left on the board. I'm surprised at how kind people have been to Byrd because of the vitriol I've seen for the Rs on the board.

I wasn't talking about you saying Byrd was perfect, I was saying that you tried to blame only those in another party, while ignoring the same activity of those you associate with. False perfectionism.

Yes, and if you believe the campaigns of Adams and Jefferson, President Adams was secretly a monarchist who plotted to return the states back over to Britain as colonies, while Vice President Jefferson was an atheist who would use the presidency to wage war against Christianity in America.

Sadly, this is a thread devoted to Sen Robert Byrd and NOT devoted to how each party treats the other when a member dies.

You are certainly free to start one decrying the incivility of the Left next time
a prominent conservative dies and gets lambasted by the opposition.

I was MERELY pointing out that once again, the "family values party" that continually whines and cries and laments the loss of "the good ol days" didn't waste one single minute in grieving for the deceased.

One would think that with so many wishing for a return to "the good ol days" that we might see an attempt made at actually ACTING as people did during said "good ol days"...sadly, even that simple, old-fashioned courtesy was too much to expect.

That's beside the point. Most of Jefferson's followers, who were all idiots, typically assumed he was a good Virginia Episcopalian. To be called an atheist back then was a serious slam, just as being called a monarchist or an Anglophile, but to claim he wanted to destroy Christianity was definitely a smear tactic. I think a lot of establishment types were in the know about Jefferson being a deist, which is what would have given the Fedealist camp the idea in the first place.

I'm not finding any Voting Rights Act other than 1965. There was a Civil Rights Act in 1968, which dealing with fair housing, and provides the kind of enforcement measures not granted through the CRA of 1866.
