We live in a very materialistic country. No matter how well off someone works hard to become, a lot of us feel that we could have done better. There is nothing wrong with ambition itself. The problem comes when you are dissatisfied with what you have and start blaming others for your perceived lack. My brother-in-law is a good example. They had a beautiful home on a small lake, put their two kids through college, had little debt, plenty of material things. Yet he was still bitter about losing out on that promotion long after he had retired. If there had been a Trump back then, he would have gotten Bob's vote.

I’m old-school. I blame my lack of success on me. In my 20s, I was out every weekend having fun while some of my friends were grinding. I have 60K+ posts on this board and have spent thousands of hours here instead of focusing on my craft. I’m not aware of too many who recommend going that route.

It’s not fun to do as it’s easier to blame others, but like Michael Jackson said I’m looking at the man in the mirror when it comes to my failures.

I think taking responsibility transcends political beliefs. Politicians and political parties thrive on dividing people by race, ethnicity or economic status. But at the end of the day, we all have control over ourselves.

Some people had much tougher upbringings and circumstances, and they have legitimate reasons for why things are harder. But for most of us, it’s personal.

I was not accusing you of refusing to take responsibility. Sure responsibility does transcend political beliefs.

But some people focus on giving an out for those who do not want to take responsibility. Some positions lend themselves to that. When you pretend that facts are fluid, those who are desperate to avoid responsibility (facts) will jump on it.

I agree that facts shouldn’t be treated as fluid. There’s always going to be a segment of people who look for excuses, whatever their politics are.

It’s also human nature to be comforted by someone telling us it’s not our fault. But in the long run, most people do better when they take ownership of their own situation instead of waiting for someone else to fix it.
