Americans brace for food stamps to run out: ‘The greatest hunger catastrophe since the Great Depression’

Two decades ago, Sara Carlson, then a mother of three, was newly single because of a traumatic event, and the US’s food stamp program, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap), helped her feed her children with free food supplies.

“I wouldn’t have been able to afford to live,” said Carlson, 45, who lives in Rochester, Minnesota, and now works as an operations manager for a wealth-management firm and serves on the board of Channel One Regional Food Bank, which works to increase food access.

While the food stamps helped her, the government cut her off after a couple years because she started making too much money, which meant she again had to worry about having enough food.

Now, nearly 42 million people around the country could face the same fate if the federal government shutdown continues and funding for Snap is cut off on 1 November.

Should funding run out at the end of the month, “we will have the greatest hunger catastrophe in America since the Great Depression, and I don’t say that as hyperbole”, said Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America.

Snap supports working families with low-paying jobs, low-income people aged 60 years and older and people with disabilities living on a fixed income, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Snap participants generally must be at or below 130% of the federal poverty line. The average participant receives about $187 a month, the center reports.

Hey, but we all get a new ballroom, so it's ok!

My liberal friends, this move the Trump administration is making is a NEEDED move. So so so many who are getting food stamps, the majority are low wage earners, who's income qualifies them for food stamps. But a lot of families and I personally know a few, just sit on their lazy ass's and benefit solely from liberal policies and never VOTE.
Food pantries all over the country, will be inundated by this change in a few more months. WHAT TRUMP IS DOING AND I'M PRAISING HIM FOR IT, HE'S WAKING UP THIS NON VOTERS, ESPECIALLY IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, HE'S INDIRECTLY SHOWING THE POWER OF VOTING AND THAT EVERYTHING COMES WITH A PRICE TAG. THAT IS A GOOD THING AND THE IDIOT DON'T EVEN KNOW IT. What Trump also is ignorant of, is that a vast majority on welfare.....are his white trash conservative VOTERS!!View attachment 63248
However at the same time, as least in red states, politicians are passing laws which cut out the black vote completely.

Doesn't change that SNAP and welfare are a net drain on the economy.
I posted 2 items showing the opposite. They were not political, but economic. Think hard, if you can. What is the impact of food stamps on a grocery store? Would they sell more or less food? Why more. What does that do ,make them poorer? Of course not, they use the profits to pay employees and bank the rest. Now all those people buy things with their earnings, which include food stamp profits. What is the impact on all those businesses? Why do you post like you do?
The impact of those food stamps is called the multiplier effect. At least it was 50 years ago when I took economics classes.

Oh Baloney!

Without Food Stamps, it will take many months before anyone is actually hungry. And then there are food banks and churches.

There was a time in America before Food Stamps, and I hope they cancel the program now and go back to the days when people had to work or go hungry.

I am a White-Male, I NEVER "Qualify" for any of the government programs, and I don't starve, I WORK!

Get a Freak'n JOB!

This post portrays perfectly the Republican oligarch ethos. "I've got mind, sorry your life sucks and your towns dried up, get a job".

Thank, you Kur. For you trumptards, empathy and the "golden rule" are punch lines.

Likely, nothing. People still have to eat so they'd get the money to buy food by some other means. Aside from that, what is the impact on taxpayers when roughly $2.4 trillion is being spent on what amount to welfare programs of one sort or another in the US? How much money is lost in the pipeline from taxing the productive to giving it to the nonproductive?
Would they sell more or less food? Why more.

Likely, about the same.

People would still have to eat, regardless of whether they got food stamps or not.
What is the impact on all those businesses?

On the whole economy, welfare is a net drain.
Why do you post like you do?

Because I'm a realist and want what works. Welfare, for the most part, doesn't work.

No, the impact of food stamps and welfare is to take money from the productive economy and give it away to the nonproductive. It is a net drain on the economy.

There's a serious shortage of labor in many parts of our economy. Many on welfare (in whatever form) could be employed in basic labor jobs doing productive work, but they aren't. They get a pass because they are getting money from the government that allows them to do nothing productive and get by.

In fact, if anything, generous welfare programs only increase the gulf between poor and rich. They often act to keep people from getting ahead and encourage black markets, 'under the table' work, and criminal behavior to fill the void of something to do because productive work would lead to loss of benefits.

No empathy is a MAGA requirement.

Make America Great Again is a slogan, not a person, stupid.

You don't mind if I call you "stupid," since everyone who meets you already does?

Those who love America may indeed support empathy. Where you Marxists are psychopaths incapable of empathy.

Look at this Schumer Shutdown - denying food to American citizens because you want to bribe illegals to invade with free healthcare. democrats gunna be psychopaths - it's just your nature.

Those on food stamps can always pawn their piles of stuff like big screen TV's, iphones, bling, and who-knows-what, that they have acquired by various means. They can sell their car and take public transit too. After all, the Left LOVES public transit and thinks everybody should be using it all the time.

Of course, the vulture class of Americans won't do that. They like their toys and stuff too much. So, for them, it becomes all about how the government isn't subsidizing their lazy asses and promoting their materialistic lifestyle.

My mom used to manage a combined churches community help center. The gave away free used clothing and furniture emergency food boxes and some financial help. They would require people cut their cable TV in order to get financial support. People would rarely do that.

And yet the majority of snap recipients are either the working poor, disabled or elderly.
