The East Colonnade does not date to 1792. While the original White House construction began that year under President George Washington (with the cornerstone laid in 1792 and the main structure completed in 1800), the East Colonnades' history is as follows:
  • An early version, known as the East Terrace or colonnaded terrace, was added by President Thomas Jefferson around 1805–1807 as a connection to service buildings.
  • This original terrace was removed in 1866.
  • The modern East Colonnade was reconstructed in 1902 during President Theodore Roosevelt's major White House renovations, serving as a formal entryway and later expanded in 1942 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt to accommodate wartime needs and conceal an underground bunker.
The 1902–1942 version is what was demolished in 2025. No part of the structure under renovation originated in 1792.
