Why is BP taking all the blame?

It's the government's fault for not preventing BP from violating regulations/laws? Is this defense open to all criminals or just the super rich ones, Ditzy?

It is the government's responsibility to monitor BP and make sure they are adhering to the regulations we have established. This is why we fund the MMS, this is why we pass the laws and make the regulations. What we have discovered is, the people in government who were supposed to be doing this, were accepting bribes, letting the oil companies write their own evaluations, and surfing porn on the Internet while they were supposed to be working.

What's really astonishing is, the liberals will now push for even MORE regulations and restrictions, and even MORE governmental oversight, when that wasn't the problem!

More astonishing was the direct promise to fix the MMS specifically during a campaign by somebody famous somewhere...

Tom, the people who will push BP into bankruptcy, are the very same liberals you have been cheerleading for the past 8 years or so. I hate to say it, but you're being killed and devoured by the very monster you created. They are now proposing we ban ALL deep water drilling, to go along with bans on drilling in shallow water, ice water, and no water. The liberals don't want us to drill anywhere for oil, because they figure if we have to buy foreign oil, the cost will rise and we will use less. These are the morons YOU support politically! Not ME, I am part of that "drill, baby, drill" crowd. I am also a capitalist, and I think it's stupid beyond belief to be actively attempting to bury BP over this. I'm with you on that, and I think at least some of the blame goes to the government for failing to properly monitor BP, as the laws were established. It's not a lack of regulation, it's a failure of government to do their job and enforce the regulations already on the books. But YOUR liberals are going to use this as an opportunity to push for more government control, more regulations, more red tape, more bans and moratoriums on drilling, and more assault on capitalist corporations like BP.

I can't help but agree with you about this, energy policy in the US and in the UK is seriously illogical. If you want to wean yourselves off foreign energy supplies then you don't have many choices or indeed time to provide alternatives.

Hold on to your knickers, Tom, but I have to agree. The One is kicking up as much dust as he can to keep the light off himself that he'd even throw his own children under the bus to do so.

I do think BP has a huge portion of the blame, but for the Obama Apologists and the few who still are cheering on the sidelines for this disaster of a president, it's beyond embarrassing. Talk about not being able to own your $hit. Obama has tanked in a major way and now he's trying to squirm out of it.

I hear your retirement system over there could implode since so much was invested in BP. Is this true?

The dog and pony show from congress was disgusting~~~ If anyone ever treated one of those arrogant bastards to their own holier-than-thou bullshit sessions they'd scream bloody murder!

BP and any other person or entity involved in any type of corner cutting that led to this disaster should be held to account...but let's get all the information eh?

What we do know is that Oblama has been a dismal leader through-out this disaster.

This 20 billion is just more show and tell for Oblama and his cronies on the Hill. That money will both not be enough and will be as mismanaged as this crisis. It will be used to buy political favors and much of it will be wasted...

Hold the phone! America "bullied" BP to pony up the $20 billion in escrow?

Give me a fucking break with this jingoistic British bullshit!

BP had NO problem taking a major profit from the outsourcing...nor did it have a problem in approving all decisions made. But now they want to wash their hands of a major screw-up?

Naa-unnh, son. BP is NOT going to pass the buck on this one...and Obama basically kicked ass and took names in that meeting, and told them just that. BP is NOT the British gov't, nor is it representative of every member of the UK. They are a multi-national corporation originated in England. They fucked up, and they will be held accountable.

Now, if ONLY Obama and company had the chutzpah to apply the same determination to hold Dick Cheney accountable for his part in this.

He won't because his own appointee allowed the same BS to continue. They fired her (without any apparent knowledge from the Dear Leader) quietly and are desperately trying to push all blame onto anybody they can, without pointing the finger at the government that gave them the pass on safety regulations, shoot not just a pass they gave that very platform a fricking award!

Their negligence can be documented through the approval the government gave at every turn, through the waivers they granted them to do what they did... through the awards they handed out to them for their "awesome" safety record as they killed people at their refineries first, then later when this platform exploded...

Who are you supposed to be talking to anyway? Why the hell do you care so much? You live at least 2000 miles away, yet you act as if it's on your doorstep!!

1. FREEDOM means getting to drive what we want to drive.
2. All of Europe could fit inside of Texas, with room for Turkey too.
3. Nothing will eliminate the need to drill for oil except buying more foreign oil.

Another "Dixie Fact". Europe could fit in Texas! HAHAHAHA..

I understand how you can be so conservative, you lack of understanding about the world is soooo puny so is your understanding of politics
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Europe could fit into Texas! Geesh!

BTW, Texas is just about half the size of FRANCE, the second largest European country for the benefit of you other Drill Party Members who are likewise as uninformed as to the outside world!

Actually you are wrong as well, Texas and France are the same size more or less.

Are you saying that you have no idea how many oil wells are on land in Great Britian and/or just offshore??

No I'm saying that you are lazy.

It's been noted that cheney's fat mouth has been silent regarding the spill. I guess his daughter Liz is acting as front man to defend the family honor (ha ha) re: Halliburton's part in the debacle.

You are correct, I was looking at KM for France and Miles for Texas... My point still stands!

No, your point was incorrect. My point still stands. Europe is considerably smaller than the United States, you can drive from Spain to France to Germany and then to Italy, in less than a day. We are a lot more spread out here, thus we drive much further on a daily basis, than the average driver in Europe. That was the point, even though I was incorrect with my representation of size.

Still, it was pretty funny seeing you mock me for my lack of knowledge, then display your even greater lack of knowledge. "France is twice as big as Texas!" LMAO.... Priceless!

Your lack of knoledge was huge, you said Europe could fit into Texas. What an idiotic statement!

It was an exaggeration, dimwit! Relatively speaking, all of Europe is a fraction of the size of the United States. This stems from Tom's assertion that if Americans drove cars like they do in Europe, we wouldn't need to drill for oil in the deep waters of the gulf. Now, I am not sure if Tom was talking about the Bugatti, Maserati, Ferrari, or Porsche, but he apparently thinks Europe has vastly more fuel efficient automobiles that we don't have. If you want to focus myopically on an idiotic statement, there are plenty in this thread!
