How did those statements indicate he’s not desperate to get it? In fact first statement suggest, he’s fairly obsessed with it.

Often times when people are desperate for something, they downplay their chances of getting it.

He was basically trying to dare the committee to give it to him.

Not expecting to receive it, is not the same thing as not being desperate to receive it.

Your logical fallacies indicate that you do not understand rhetoric.

The number of times he has mentioned it shows how desperate he is for it.
