Before you can read this, a thousand more gallons of crude spews into the gulf!

We hear the talking heads telling us, the leak in the gulf is estimated at 60,000 barrels... 40,000 barrels... they reduced the flow by 20,000 barrels... per day. But do we really have a grasp of exactly how much oil we're talking about? A barrel of crude oil, is 42 u.s. gallons. In the most conservative estimates, there are approximately 1,700,000 gallons of crude spewing into the gulf daily...70,000 gallons per hour... 1,200 gallons per minute.... 20 gallons per second.

The EPA has prohibited several efforts to mitigate the oil...
The MMS has gone into CYA mode...
BP continues to scratch their heads...
BO has given several eloquent speeches...
Congress has held hearings...

But no one has stopped the oil... 1,200 gallons per minute... from spewing into the gulf! In fact, we are told by BP, it will be AUGUST before we can expect the oil flow to be stopped. AUGUST... two months from now... 100,000,000 gallons from now!

But the president is going to meet with the greatest minds, and they are going to talk about this, and discuss ways they may be able to help. He is going to appoint a panel to study this, and of course, BP will be held accountable and made to pay for cleaning this up... but can anyone clean this up? Will the Gulf of Mexico ever be the same? Will the sugar white sands of the gulf coast, ever be the same again?

Even conservative estimates have it at decades for the Gulf to recover, and I have read some reports that things may never be the same. Species could be lost for good, and the entire food chain disrupted irrevocably.

It's an unbelievable, fairly unmitigated disaster...

Your "sudden" concern is duly noted. It is worth noting that you, and most other NeoCons spent up to the first two months of this well blowout downplaying it, blabbing about the "problem" of natural seepage, and proclaiming that it was foolish to compare this clusterfuck to Exxon Valdez.

However, kudos on clearing the cobwebs of rightwing talk radio out of your mind.

No one knows what the Gulf will look like in ten years. These are uncharted waters, and it's beyond anything technology or science is prepared to provide and credible and definitive conclusions on.

One hopes that someday you will approach climate science with the same level of concern; i.e., that we shouldn't take risks if the consequences are potentially catastrophic - even if science is not capable of providing us a one thousand percent rock solid guarantee of certainty and clarity.

Also, most sane people hope that you've learned your lesson about deregulation, and that the Captains of Industry can not be trusted to put safety and environment on an equal par with profit and stock price.

Why is nothing being done? Why don't we have super-tankers out there sucking up as much as they can? Why does the EPA continue to stand in the way of efforts to disperse the oil that is already there? Why does the president continue to TALK and MEET, and not ACT?

We all remember the clip of Bush sitting in the classroom reading the goat book... the befuddled look on his face when he learned of 9/11... the liberals got a lot of mileage out of that infamous moment, the look of confusion and indecision on Bush's face... that was only a few minutes, Obama has been in a similar stupor for TWO MONTHS now!

Now there's a new one. This is Obama's "My Pet Goat" moment. LOL.

Man, you really get a sense of the baggage Bushies have had to carry around w/ this disaster.

I think it's hilarious that Obama is being blamed for the actual spewing of oil, as though he is supposed to invent the technology that can actually cap the thing. This whole disaster is much more of a lesson on how profits don't rule when it comes to common sense prevention and precautionary measures.

As for "nothing is being done," pick up a paper once in awhile...

Just shut the fuck up. I am really growing tired of liberals who don't give two shits about the gulf coast or the environment, harping on this for political gain. You're a fucking WHORE! You will USE this disaster to promote your liberal agenda, to push for your liberal idiocy, and promote your cockamamie liberal ideas, and you don't really give a damn how much crude oil is spewing into the gulf, in fact, the more the better in your eyes, because that just makes this disaster that much more effective at driving home your idiot message!

Irony, thy name is Dixie.

Dixie's a spoof. I'm telling you. Its gets clearer all the time.

YES, except, it's TWO MONTHS later, and Bush is still sitting there in the chair with the stupid look on his face, not knowing what he should do! That's the only difference here!

Let me just say again as someone who lives in the area and fished in the now fucked for decades Barataria bay, Skull drag BP. I'll be shocked if they are not found criminally negligent.

Any critisism of Obama is at least as fair as Bush/Katrina response critisism.

And this from and oil/fanboy.

That's a pretty blanket statement. Both can be legitimately criticized for certain aspects of each crisis. I have always faulted Bush for not showing leadership when it came to actually getting people out of those streets.

There is plenty to criticize Obama about here, but the idea that he is responsible for the well not being capped yet? You're an oil guy, tops; is that really legit?

NO,
But MMS critisism is 110% justified. He say's he knew they were cozy with oil and he puts in his own Brownie. So he is complicite in his inaction which he admits but brushes over. Congress has oversite, they act like they have zero responsiblity.

Why has he NOT taken control of the capping operation away from the keystone cops operation BP is runnung and handed the task to any one of the experts employed by other, safer oil companies?

That would be my first step as president, were I in Barack's shoes.

Because nobody including him in his administration have the first clue how to do it.

And what the fuck was Bush supposed to do? Go down there and slap the goddamn beer out of their hands and demand they get the fuck out? I watched the reporters in New Orleans DAYS before the hurricane hit, interviewing people who didn't seem to be the least bit concerned about the danger, insisting they were staying, not worried a bit about the impending disaster, and living it up!
