LIMA, Peru – Seven-year-old Daisy Cuevas, thrilled to see herself on television with U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama, didn't quite understand the predicament in which she had innocently placed her undocumented Peruvian parents

"My mom says that Barack Obama is taking away everybody that doesn't have papers," Daisy told the U.S. first lady on May 19 at the New Hampshire Estates Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland.

"Well, that's something that we have to work on, right, to make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers," Michelle Obama replied.

"But my mom doesn't have papers," said Daisy, a U.S. citizen by virtue of her birth.

The color immediately drained from her mother's face. She ran crying to call her parents in Lima, then went into hiding, fearful of being deported.

These are tense times for people like Daisy's mother, a maid who arrived in the United States with her carpenter husband when she was two months pregnant with Daisy.

Daisy's parents are fearful of U.S. anti-immigrant sentiment, which for many Latin Americans is epitomized by an Arizona law taking effect in July that gives police the right to demand ID papers of anyone suspected of being in the country illegally.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has said it is not pursuing Daisy's parents. Immigration investigations, it said in a statement, "are based on making sure the law is followed and not on a question-and-answer discussion in a classroom."

anyway....back to the substance of the thread

is obama right to not uphold US law in this case? if she had said her mother was a drug addict, obama would send in the troops...however, she said her mother is guilty of something politically sensitive....so....obama purposefully is not upholding the law because he doesn't know which way the wind will shift on this

seems pretty cowardly

So Obama's supposed to send in the storm troopers because of an off-hand comment an excited 7-year old makes?

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has said it is not pursuing Daisy's parents. Immigration investigations, it said in a statement, "are based on making sure the law is followed and not on a question-and-answer discussion in a classroom."

First, there's not nearly enough info given about the parents and second, your comment that "obama purposefully is not upholding the law, etc." is BS to the nth degree, just another gratuitous insult.

You'd send in the troops because someone said their mother was a drug addict? Maybe if she was a drug dealer.

Deporting the girls mother would make him seem like a monster. It would be a heartless thing to do.

so our public officers are now storm troopers? where the fuck did i say storm troopers? you're the one insulting our law enforcement officers....

and obama is in fact not upholding the law...based on what she said they have probable cause for a warrant, they check on people's status ALL THE TIME, yet he won't do it here because it is not politically correct....tough shit, he has a duty to enforce our laws and he is willfully breaching that duty

again with the troops....they would send someone from INS, the girl is enrolled in school, it would be nothing to get her home information

its heartless? upholding the law is heartless? what is heartless about this? if you don't agree with immigration laws, then i can see that....YET...obama has no problem sending his "troops" to bust up pot smokers

Which would have absolutely nothing to do with the law. Should we have deported Elian, because that was pretty heartless?
