Republicans are opening an investigation into child labor abuses potentially taking place in Gavin Newsom's California.

Republican leaders in the House are investigating an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid on two California cannabis farms from earlier this month after unaccompanied minors were discovered working as laborers there by federal agents.

The joint operation — carried out earlier this month by ICE and CBP officers — focused on two marijuana growing facilities.

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom originally commented on the raid and was heavily critical of the federal government. This led CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott to break the news to him that they found 10 juveniles, eight of whom were alone.

The Daily Caller News Foundation first obtained letters sent by House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, a Republican from Ohio, to the Department of Homeland Security — and the Department of Health and Human Services — about a congressional investigation into the matter.

“The discovery of these juveniles at a marijuana facility, and in the presence of at least one dangerous illegal alien previously convicted of child molestation, highlights the continuing consequences of the Biden-Harris Administration’s open-border policies,” Jordan wrote.

Jordan was joined by Rep. Tom McClintock, a Republican from California, who is the chairman of the Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement. Both lawmakers cited failures by the Biden administration as the reason for such negligence.

“The discovery of UACs [Unaccompanied Alien Children] at a California marijuana farm raises questions about [Office of Refugee Resettlement] ORR’s placement of UACs — particularly during the Biden-Harris Administration — and the sufficiency of sponsor vetting,” the lawmakers added. “Pursuant to the Rules of the House of Representatives, the Committee on the Judiciary is authorized to conduct oversight of federal immigration policy and procedures.”

The Judiciary Committee is requesting more information from DHS and HHS about where the minors are being held, their case history, family background, and other details. They also want a response by Aug. 7, the DNCF reported.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the president of Glass House of Farms — the company that owns and operates the raided marijuana sites — has a history of donating large sums to Democrats.

Using child labor on such a farm, even for those who were not trafficked here without their parents, is illegal, it just makes it more so that they were brought here without their parents. Pretending that the folks arrested from that farm were picking strawberries and not illegally using child slave labor should be criminal.

When they say unaccompanied minor, they mean that when they were taken into custody, they were not accompanied by their parents. Many of these teenagers have homes with parents in them, which they drive to and from in their car. Five of the ten of them had cars there.

If you look at the site that this site cites, you will see they are talking about a dispensary. These were not dispensaries.
Under state law, all cannabis industry employees must be over the age of 21 to work at a dispensary or other cannabis business.

They were grows attached to a dispensary. Stop being obtuse. And when they (ICE) says "unaccompanied minor" it means they were unable to find responsible family adults that were in charge of the minor inside the US. Regardless of that fact which is bad enough alone, in order to work in any grow or dispensary they must be old enough to use, whether they are in a job that "touches" it or not.

You are being deliberately obtuse, and simply rather "free" with facts, however you don't get to have your own facts. This was not some kids "working on a farm" they were kids that were trafficked and they were working illegally, underage at a grow for a dispensary. Trafficked children.. that this Newscum tried to make political points on.
 
In 2024, Newsom signed additional legislation, including SB 1414, which further increased penalties for soliciting minors under 16 or those under 18 who are victims of human trafficking. This was part of a broader effort to crack down on human trafficking and support victims, including funding for task forces and survivor services.

ICE is not trying to find these teenagers' families, so of course they cannot find them. These kids were registered into schools by their families. Their families hired them lawyers. They had families to sign off when they bought their cars. We could go on and on. So there are definitely families out there.

Given that ICE no longer allows detained people to call their families, nor makes any attempt to contact families, saying their families are not found is little dishonest.

Given that families are usually here on the same type of visa, so almost certainly the entire family's visa has been cancelled, showing up at ICE means they will just get imprisoned and deported too. The families have hired lawyers for the teenagers, because the teenagers did not return home.

There is a law about dispensaries, but not about farms. And it is a state law, so ICE would have no say in doing anything about it.

But if you were to employ trafficked children, you would do it for enough of the workforce to matter. Teenagers made up less than 3% of the workforce, so saved almost no money. And yet it would be a major crime if it were slave labor, however much of the workforce it is.

A real legal case would be moving towards arrests, arraignments, indictments, etc. None of that is happening. Either the trump justice department is covering things up, or these were just teenagers with an agricultural job.

They first gave a range of 8 to 14, but then looked at the minors' visas and figured out it was 10.

Just a reminder, all these people had valid visas for the period of employment when they started their jobs. It is uncertain whether the trump administration is allowed to cancel those visas. They were not informed those visas were cancelled.

Bullshit. Children are trafficked into the US illegally. The drug cartels use teens regularly to smuggle their drugs in. Many people coming in illegally get a kid off the street in some Turd World country along the way to use as a tool to game US immigration laws and then dump the kid once they're inside the US. Don't give me that shit that these kids all came with their family and it's all lovey dovey.

Families that came across illegally had no visa. In fact, ICE generally uses DNA testing now to find out if children are actually related to the adults they are with claiming a family relationship (which they often aren't). ICE has little means available to find a child's actual family in some other country so unaccompanied children are often in a pickle where they're deportable, but to where and whom should they go?

There are federal child labor laws too. In any case, ICE was at that farm to arrest persons illegally in the US, adult or child.

Having a car, being in school, or whatever doesn't speak to whether these children had family present or were unaccompanied in the US.

Employers using illegals for labor don't particularly give a shit about the age of those workers. It's also possible that the worker lied about their age to get the job. Much of the illegal labor force works for less than minimum wage, often paid in cash so no taxes, etc., are taken out or reported, and employers sometimes use the threat of deportation to keep workers working.

Here's an example from Arizona just last month. A restaurant chain with 5 locations was trafficking illegals in to work for them. They paid less than minimum wage, didn't pay taxes, etc., had drop / stash houses in use and were using phony intermediary businesses to hide everything. The owners got arrested and the illegals are being processed for deportation.

That is what's happening with the pot farm arrests. My bet is that the DOJ may well come back with charges against the owners and corporate officers of those farms in the next few months.

Most, if not all, didn't have visas. If they had a visa, they weren't in the US illegally.

No, they didn't. That's why they were arrested. The company running the pot farms knowingly hired illegals and it's likely that the corporate officers will eventually get charged. But do try to show some evidence to the contrary like their having visas.
