New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani did not hide his opinion of capitalism on Thursday night, saying he disliked it and invoking Martin Luther King Jr. to bolster his position.

During an interview with CNN anchor Erin Burnett, Mamdani embraced his identity as a democratic socialist and said he has many problems with capitalism.

"No, I have many critiques of capitalism," he said in response to Burnett asking him if he likes it.

Mamdani secured the Democratic Party nomination for New York City mayor on Tuesday in an upset over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and several other candidates.

Mamdani ran a campaign focused on making one of the country’s most expensive places to live more attainable for average residents. His proposals call for multi-year rent freezes and massive investment in public housing. Critics argue his proposals could worsen existing problems in the rental market. He has also taken criticism for not condemning the anti-Israel rallying cry, "Globalize the Intifada."

During his CNN appearance Thursday, Mamdani touted his plans to freeze rent and increase taxes on New York’s wealthiest residents. Burnett followed up by asking about him being described as a democratic socialist.

Capitalism has been the catalyst for more freedom and prosperity than any other economic unit in the world.

Name one country where Socialism has benefitted the people.

That’s why tens of millions of people from all over the globe are coming here and investing here.

N.Y.C. is the financial and cultural hub of the world.

We don’t want it to morph into Venezuela.

Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all God’s children.” – Speech to the Negro American Labor Council, 1961.

You right-wing assholes want America to morph into North Korea.

The youth of today are not afraid of terms like socialism. They see what is wrong when corporations and the super wealthy make the decisions. Over half a million kids have been in schools where there have been shootings. They will not blindly accept the gun lobbys terrible justifications for mass shootings in America. They will not accept the lies of the powerful like the Repubs do.
We do not have capitalism. We have oligopoly headed for plutocracy. We do not have to argue capitalism. It was gone a long time ago.

Well, let's look at his plan from the perspective of history.

Rent controls. What happens when you artificially set rent amounts? First, you disincentivize new construction. Why build capacity if you can't make a decent ROI on it? Sure it helps renters at the low end of the spectrum, but finding a rent controlled apartment that isn't occupied becomes a near impossibility. Those renting when the controls go into effect sit tight on their apartment to get the benefits of rent control. Fewer units are available and nobody is building new capacity.
Landlords also seeing rent control coming will raise rates as much as they can before those are in place. So, apartment rents become expensive, there's fewer apartments available--often owners will convert to selling apartments off as condos rather than face rent control--and the lower income renters end up screwed.

Public housing. That's been tried. Go back and look at how well LBJ's "Great Society" plan worked with those. Look at how expensive Section 8 can be for the government. Public housing results in poverty, crime, urban blight, and squalor. That's true across the world not just in the US. A massive investment in it will be a disaster and one that could be avoided if you pay attention to history.

Raising taxes massively on the rich. They'll move rather than pay them. They have the resources and money to move. They will give you the finger on the way out too.

Heavy handed socialism doesn't work. Never has, never will. You cannot force people to be and act altruistically and that is what Socialism at its core requires. Not happening.

It only works for those in charge.

This guy's communist agenda really isn't that much different than the dems current communist agenda. Oh, he wants to defund
the police. Where or with whom have I heard that before? AOC comes to mind. Oh, and AOC was with the communist at his latest
rally...cheering him on. This commie's hatred of capitalism is the exact same hatred that current dems have for it. The entire dem
party are socialists.

If he gets in it will help Republicans regain control in NYC. This guy will wreck NYC . If he defunds the police criminals will flock to NYC

Aw look! Concern Troll has come to explain it all. So that's why yu MAGATs are so verklempt over him. You're deeply concerned about the future of NYC and especially her very LW population. It's so touching!

In reality, he scares the pants off you, as does AOC.

He scares the pants and panties off of all normal pro Americans for he's a damn communist, which is what the entire dem party has become.
If this commie becomes mayor of N.Y.C. then that city will die rather quickly as businesses, police and people in general will be leaving that
shit city in flocks. And they won't be moving to Boston, Chicago, D.C. or L.A., for those cities and states are already infiltrated with democrat communist leaders representing the dem party.

I'm not so sure that the choices are either unfettered capitalism, or socialism.

I have always considered myself a capitalist. But when I see the Bezos wedding juxtaposed against the millions who are hungry, without decent heathcare and in tremendous debt (even though they're working) - it makes me go hmmmmmmmm.

Never directly attacked capitalism, you and Fox lied, shocker, instead he talked about NYC’s income inequality and his goal was to help those on the bottom do better coping with the consequences, and, cited MLK’s reference to the same to include MLK’s calling for social democratic reform. And from that Fox concluded he slammed capitalism, which of course lemmings as “earl” swallowed

Ah, “earl, America is part socialism, and has been since the 19th Century, a bet your SS and Medicare have benefited you just fine

And a little economic lesson for you, all economies in the world aren’t part socialism, they are all mixed economies, your 20th Century thinking is antiquated

I don't draw SS...Civil Service retirement that I paid for. Same for Medicare...I pay for it.

Those are not examples of socialism, they are examples of paid for services.

Your 19th Century thinking is antiquated.
