“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert said he was in a great mood at the start of Monday night’s show.
“This weekend was Father’s Day, and daddy got just what he wanted,” Colbert said. “No one came to Trump’s big, stupid birthday parade.”
President Donald Trump’s $45 million military parade held Saturday ― the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army as well as his own birthday ― was marked by low turnout and even lower energy.
“Of course, the White House claims that 250,000 people attended, so now apparently a quarter of a million people looks like this,” Colbert said, showing a photo of a sparse crowd at the event. “They must be really good at hide-and-seek.”
But one moment stood out: When Trump tried to place his pinky against the hand of his wife, first lady Melania Trump.
“Rejected!” Colbert exclaimed as he showed the awkward footage of her pulling away slightly. “That is risky of her, not to respond to his pinky, because as commander in chief, he could have declared a thumb war.”
