Always being aware of one's surroundings can help a great deal.
Here's one that I'm not sure a gun would have saved the victim.
I have personally stayed at that Ashley Inn about a month before this happened.

I carry even when taking the garbage out to the curb.

Guns are not a panacea for self protection.

They more often end up getting their owner in trouble with the law or killed themselves.

Or... they might have taken the gun away from him, beaten him to death anyway, then used the gun on somebody else.

He might have made them run by activating a loud, piercing personal alarm that can be purchased anywhere.

If it didn't make them run, it might have summoned help.

Why does the first response always have to be "should have had a gun"?

In the UK, I'd say carrying a very stout full-length umbrella or walking stick would be better. Used in the bartitsu style of self-defense, either would have seriously and quickly messed those girls up.

They are not a panacea but all things equal I would prefer to have one with me.

Training minimizes bad outcomes for the gun owner.

If I ever have to draw my handgun in self defense it's my hope it will cause retreat but if not so be it.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by six.

As far as getting killed yourself, would this victim or the one in my story be in worse condition had they had a gun?

Always empty your gun into your attacker. This way you won't be shot with it afterwards if they don't stop and take it from you. They may kill you with it but they will have to beat you to death with it.
