So the "Lunch Brunch" was created and functioned for a period of time UNCONTESTED until a "field trip" that pisses off a bunch of kids who think they were cheated out of a day off from regular classes. Suddenly, everyone gets their asses in gear and the club is disbanded.

As for the field trip, it was just a terrible idea. Black kids are not the only ones who can benefit from black role models.

Taichi, many if not most elementary school kids would feel cheated out of a chance to meet a rocket scientist. I see no reason to assume most just wanted a break from classes.

The field trip is not that big a deal. I can understand why the other kids got upset, but let's don't pretend it is some grave injustice that will damage their life. I find the message to the black kids far more troubling and that message seems to be... Your race is inferior and race is your identity. Your education will be tailored to your skin color rather than to you as an individual.

These black children were all being treated as if they were failing based on skin color. The ones that are not failing are having the time and resources devoted to their education wasted based on the performance of the group.

MLK dreamed that one day his children would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. That's the goal. This program certainly does not achieve that goal. Though it may have been well intended it can only achieve the opposite. If it had been the idea of a white administrator it would have been called out as racism. Plenty of white racists DID/DO have good intentions.

Racist don't always wear hoods, funny little mustaches or shave their heads. Sometimes, they are sweet old ladies that honestly think black people make pretty babies. Their intentions are not based in hate, but their actions are condescending based on group identity rather than the individual identity.

Nonsense, these are niche cultural markets. Do you bitch about the ethnic food aisle or a grocery store that specializes in serving one specific ethnic group? The mass market is dominated by whites. There is no need for a niche product aimed at explicitly at whites. There are niche products aimed at smaller sub groupings of whites.
