In truth though, most farmers with a normal level of intelligence understand that cats perform a valuable service in keeping down populations of rodents which would otherwise destroy their crops.

Again you know nothing of farm life. Cats mostly prey on birds they are an easier more tasty meal. They will wipe out a pheasant population by killing all the babies. They do jack shit to hold down rats or other crop destroying rodents. I've shot hundreds of ground squirrels in alfalfa fields only to find there is not visibly less of them out snacking on the corpses.
